To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

Why are people saying it wasn't hot? If you were in the South East it was ridiculously hot for a lot longer than a few days. It was up at 38/40C. Nursery closed early because it was so hot.
It was relentless.
I am also dreading it (and would give anything to move to the Highlands).

TokyoStories · 18/02/2023 13:20

I’m dreading it too. I’m in the south east in a new build, highly insulated flat with floor to ceiling windows that traps heat and never cools down in the summer. It went on and on last year, not sure why some people are saying it was ‘just a few days’ Confused

I was wrapping myself in wet towels and had two tower fans going but all they did was blow warm air around. My cat became ill, probably exacerbated by the heat, and I had to rush him to the vets. It was an awful time and I don’t know how I’m going to cope this year. I’m going to have to get an aircon unit with cash I don’t really have.

I think the people that love it either don't work or maybe are 'working' from home (ie. Fannying around at home under the illusion of work). Probably its the same people who ironically complain that the country goes to pot in extreme weather - while simultaneously doing FA useful to contribute to the running of the country themselves.

Timetoretire · 18/02/2023 18:44

It was constantly hot and in the South East I think that was the problem; it didn’t cool down at night(and for some people upstairs is even hotter). This meant the body’s temperature never got a chance to cool down and reset.
i feel it is a shame there are so many comments putting down peoples responses about the heat. We are all different after all.

Nice comment…

Some of us are terrified of winter. We are all different.

I loved the heat last year. I hate cold weather and grey skies. I am not on pain when it is hot.

I spent the hottest day of the year fannying around with a sledgehammer and breaking up concrete flooring and then I did a little light ceiling and kitchen removal and various other manual jobs throughout the hot weather.

Come the cold weather I freeze up

TigeToo · 19/02/2023 21:30

I dread summer every year. Sticky and sweaty all the time, sunlight blasting through the blinds all day, screeching kids everywhere, fair weather dog walkers out in force … give me winter any day

The heat last year was unbearable. On the hottest day I was working, finished work (at the seaside) at lunch time and it was 34 degrees. By the time I got back to the city it was 41. My dogs were overheating. I stepped outside to put some washing out and burnt my bastard feet

TigeToo · 19/02/2023 21:31

Plus 3 showers a day

NEW01EDGE · 20/02/2023 06:12

I dread middle class women droning on about First World issues when half the planet are starving, have no shelter, access to clean water or health care. It's utterly pathetic. Get a hobby and some ice cubes.

Delatron · 20/02/2023 09:04

People are talking like last summer is an every year occurrence. It isn’t. It was rare to see such temperatures (and I get the separate climate change issue) but we often get crap, rainy summers. So I’m sure you’ll all be fine. Even when it is warm it lasts for about 3 days.

Winter is cold and dreary without fail every single year and goes on for a lot longer.

Untitledsquatboulder · 20/02/2023 09:06

What makes you think they are all middle class @NEW01EDGE ?

NEW01EDGE · 20/02/2023 09:26

Just a hunch...

You do realise it is possible to care deeply about the terrible things happening in the world AND still be worried about more minor issues, @NEW01EDGE! Or do you think no-one can ever be concerned about anything except the most dire problems on the planet?

NEW01EDGE · 20/02/2023 09:40

Care deeply <> doing something about it..

TheWitchingHour · 20/02/2023 10:18

I absolutely despise the heat it was truly unbareable last summer, I hate summer in general and dread it every year.

Im on benefits on a council estate, definitely not middle class 🤣 people are allowed to complain, just people there are people starving on the planet doesn’t mean everyone should never moan or complain about anything, ever. How silly.

TigeToo · 20/02/2023 10:22

NEW01EDGE · 20/02/2023 09:26

Just a hunch...

What’s wrong with being middle class? Or are you one of those people that think you need to be on the breadline to complain about anything?

Teateaandmoretea · 24/02/2023 15:21

I think it’s probably easier to cope with the heat if you’re middle class and live in a nice detached house with a garden and shaded parts. I’ve always thought tower block must be utterly horrendous in heat.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/02/2023 15:46

@Teateaandmoretea im middle class I think. And I live in a flat. Though of course, being middle class, I call it an apartment 😆 so what do you reckon my chances of coping with the heat are? 😜

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/02/2023 15:57

Hmm I didn't realise that i had dropped out of the middle class because I live in a flat. Or does it specifically have to be a "high rise"?

MissWings · 24/02/2023 16:01

ive lived in flats with small children and it got so hot the top of our dinner table would bubble up. It was quite frankly fucking horrendous. We have since moved into a house with a garden and whilst hot, it’s not awful like our flat days. Nowhere close. I feel for people in flats.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/02/2023 16:09

Flats like houses come in different ypes.

Our block is a thick walled, 1930s built, low rise block with a large shady communal garden - Probably coolers thana lot of modern houses.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/02/2023 16:29

Yes, our apartment is well insulated so it kept the heat out and wasn’t too bad at all, and, being high up (I know right? The working class horror of it!) we got a through breeze even on the hottest days with the windows open on the vent. I also have the advantage of air con where I work so that helped.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/02/2023 16:30

@Ginmonkeyagain just call it an apartment and you’ll be grand to still claim mc status.
