To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

Its idiots throwing cigarettes out of car windows that cause roadside fires.

Lovesacake · 10/02/2023 12:31

This thread is hilarious. Last summer was record breaking temperatures, wild fires breaking out in numerous places, droughts and water shortages, schools closing, public transport restricted all because of the heat. Mumsnet was wall to wall threads of people struggling to cope with the heat and humidity.

a few months later and everyone’s like ‘nah it wasn’t that hot you drama queen’ 😂

I really, really don’t think summer, for the reasons you give, is something to be “terrified” of. Come on. It will be fine.

dannyufcfan1 · 10/02/2023 12:38

There were about 5 genuinely hot days in Liverpool, last year.

One thing us British can not do is cope with a tiny bit of heat.

World class moaners.

chocolatemademefat · 10/02/2023 12:42

Scotland’s the place for you. If my face ever gets red it’s because it’s wind chaffed. 🤣

sydsmum · 10/02/2023 12:43

I completely agree. I hate summer and only really come alive in October. Nothing good about humidity/intense heat/drought conditions and bloody bluebottles buzzing around! Not to mention my pale skin, heat rashes and sunburn. I could go on.....

TheShellBeach · 10/02/2023 12:45

West of Scotland is generally cold even when southern England is unbearable.

That's why I live in the West of Scotland.
It does rain a lot, though.

I meant to add that I'm planning on having an awning installed across my back windows before this summer. Not sure what to do about the front as they're the worst windows as that's where the sun is in the afternoon.

We have an awning at one side, SE facing over a wall of glass. The awning works well, completely stopping direct sunlight coming in during the morning. Although the other side of the house gets sun in the afternoon the windows are much smaller and every window has light-proof blinds pulled down.

idrinkandiknowthings · 10/02/2023 12:46

Can't some posters just be a bit more understanding and accept that some people just aren't lovers of, and struggle with, the heat?

I've been sun-averse since I was a kid (my dad said I born under a rock lol). I have my bedroom window open even in the depths of winter and constantly have a fan on at work.

I'm not miserable - I love a nice bright day where it's possible to have a walk in a t-shirt, but blazing sunshine? No thanks.

It really wasn't. I don't even like hot weather and I don't remember it being relentless or going on for weeks. There was that first wave when we had the 40 degree day which lasted about a week, and then another week in August.

And I don't know where the "mild" winter ideas are coming from either. It hasn't snowed, but it has been very cold and minus temperatures for weeks, I don't remember it being this cold for a while. There have been other winters where I've barely ever had to de-ice my car, this winter it seems to be frozen nearly every day.

I live about 35 miles from London.

Exactly. It was freezing in December for about 3 weeks. Minus temperatures and frozen ground. Didn’t actually get above freezing for many day. I have a heating bill to prove it..

Though I don’t like damp and mild either to be honest. Winter goes on for months annd months and you can guarantee it won’t be warm or light. Summer there is never any guarantee it will be decent. Therein lies the difference. I’ve had my heating in August before.

angela99999 · 10/02/2023 12:47

It's amazing how polarised the posts are on this thread.
I'm fair skinned, really feel the heat and don't know one person who really enjoyed the hot weeks last year.
I'm retired but feel for people in offices without good air-conditioning. Also I used to be a London commuter and found the heat on public transport quite unbearable during heatwaves.

pissssedofff · 10/02/2023 12:48

The Met office have no idea what the weather will be like in 5 months time, none whatsoever.

shivermetimbers77 · 10/02/2023 12:50

Im dreading it too - I’m in London and my flat is like a greenhouse : hard to keep it below 30 in the summer

oop · 10/02/2023 12:52

Everyone saying it wasn't that bad... It's totally dependent on your personal ability to cope with heat, your house and your lifestyle surely?

I struggle in heat a bit but had a horrendous time last year (and also feeling a little dread about this coming summer) because I now live in a house that retains heat with bedrooms in the loft, I work from home so can't escape it and I had a baby that wanted to sleep on me all day long. We had one portable Aircon unit that was incredible but every other room was over 25 degrees from end of June until end of August. The bedrooms got up to 29 degrees every night for a month.
I'm getting another portable unit this year.

Clearly you missed my reply where I stated "We had multiple fans running in our bedroom, doors open, ice in front of/behind fans etc, and nothing worked for us.".

I'd stop running all those fans and buy one air con for the bedroom. Buy it now because there will be deals at this time of year.

If you've no shower Put on teeshirt and pants, dunk your self in the bath water including head, get out, evaporate and repeat whenever necessary

Last year folks were sleeping on the kids trampoline.

Don't think folk realise Liverpool is coastal so humidity higher.

Can't come soon enough for me, I can't wait. Our house is north facing though and never too hot. Having all our meals in the garden, BBQing - I really hope it is another hot year - although I'd prefer like the covid year when it was warm and dry a lot rather than just a couple of weeks of mad heat.

Me too! Love eating in the garden, bbq’s, picnics, pimms, going to the park with the kids without needing to do a full load of washing after 😀 Everything feels better in the Summer, but agree about a long sunny Summer rather than a couple of scorching days. Sun from April to October (like 2020) is perfect for me. I always appreciate the Winter when we’ve had a proper Summer.

tara66 · 10/02/2023 12:56

London is only about 1500 Km (1000miles) from Arctic Circle so UK not really in the Tropics. Your property needs insulation such as thermal blinds on windows.

CatJumperTwat · 10/02/2023 12:56

Posters droning on about how it wasn't that hot and, if it was, it was only 4 days. People feel heat (and cold) differently. Surely that is well known?

Some people find some moral superiority in not feeling the heat (or cold). It's very odd.

Lovemusic33 · 10/02/2023 12:56

More people died of covid and flu than heat 🤔

I know some people don’t like the heat but there are ways to stay cool. Order yourself a air conditioning unit and just stay out of the sun on hot days.

I didn’t think last summer was too hot, yes we had a few really hot days but it was easy enough to stay cool.I love the summer so can’t really get worked up about it. I get more stressed about the cold weather as I can’t afford to heat my house.

Delatron · 10/02/2023 12:58

Yeah - I’d prefer a proper, consistently warm and sunny summer -say around 25-28 than ridiculous days of 40 then a drop back down to 20!

I love being outdoors, eating outdoors. Summing in the lake, paddle boarding - can’t wait. Hate the dark evenings - feel so claustrophobic to me. I have more energy with the early light too. I feel awful getting up in the dark. I’d happily hibernate until the end of April.

Without sounding rude, you do not have to have a baby sleep on you all day long. No one would like that in the heat and presumably you wont have that issue this Summer? Alot of the things people are complaining about have a solution. Also, everyone gloated about how amazing working from home is (so all us workers that still had to go to a workplace felt bad). Now people are complaining about heating bills at home/no air con at home. Can you go back to an office? Is that an option?

ChristinaXYZ · 10/02/2023 13:01

Blimey, last summer had a tiny number of very hot days. I hate hot days but YABU to be worrying about it now. If you book a holiday it will probably be the wrong days - you seem to have developed anxiety or something. Are you overly-worried about other things too - you might need to seek a bit of help with this.

Where to start.

  1. Not everyone can afford to' just order' an air con unit.
  2. Some people work outside, not in offices or at home.
  3. Some people - the horror- walk their children to and from school.
If you can't afford to heat your house, surely you can understand number 1 at least?
JoonT · 10/02/2023 13:11

Oh, thank god it’s not just me!! Yes, for the first time in my life I’m dreading the summer. I’m in Essex and found last July and August unbearable. I remember literally sobbing at one point. By the end of August I was covered in insect bites and hadn’t slept properly for weeks. I even ended up googling house prices in Northumberland and Scotland.

To make it worse, my town is overcrowded. I’ve lived here for 40 years, and during that time the population has nearly trebled. My local woods have been hacked into to make way for two giant estates, and another massive estate is being built at the other end of the village. The traffic is AWFUL. Also, various ‘problem families’ have moved into these new estates. During the heatwave, some children from the estate set fire to a barn near my house. At night, you’d hear them roaming about swearing and causing trouble. I yearned for the mud and darkness so everybody would stay indoors. The traffic is bad enough in winter, but when it’s boiling hot it all becomes too much. Hot and overcrowded - that pretty much sums up the future of this planet.

Delatron · 10/02/2023 13:14

It will probably rainy and crap. Why dread something when you have no idea what it will be like?

I know exactly what winter will be like and what it makes me feel like!
