To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

Short term, buy a fan. Long term, take some positive action for climate change because if you think this is bad, it is going to be worse for our children. Not to mention the millions more across the globe already affected who are going to be displaced further over the coming years.

I'm far from a sun worshipper and I actually have to shut my business if it gets too hot on welfare grounds.

I still don't see the benefit of winding everyone up into a frenzy 🤷🏻‍♀️

How is saying she’s anxious about another bastard hot summer ‘winding everyone up into a frenzy’?

People are here are not a homogenous mob, we have independent thought.

Anyone getting a portable AC, make sure you have room to store it when not in use, they are heavy so not something you want to lug up and down stairs, we keep ours in the spare room upstairs but as they are quite big it's not something you can just tuck away. If we got one for downstairs we would probably keep it in the garage.

I agree with you, they're big, heavy units. Fortunately we live in a good-sized apartment and our bedroom is on the same level as the living room. The unit has been tucked in a corner behind a side table. I agree, you really couldn't lug the unit up and down stairs. Our children are adults living independently now but you would need some sort of cooling for every bedroom.

And I dont mean thos to be patronising, just change what you can to feel more in control

🤣🤣🤣🤣 you're in Liverpool??? Honestly? 😆. I live not a million miles away, I know there was a short lived heatwave when we were on holiday (it was topping 43+ where we were in the south of france) but I don't recall anyone back home saying it was awful, mostly people just thrilled there was a bit of summer. I do hope it's 30 everyday this year and we can enjoy days in the paddling pool and evenings in the garden, best time of year!

I missed that OP is in Liverpool!

What a drama! It reach 35 one day, hovered around 30 for few days. That is notmal summer temp for most of central Europe etc. It wasn't like we were all melting here by midday

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 10/02/2023 09:32

Hot temperatures are doable for most if you prepare and act accordingly. Of the 3000 UK deaths, I'd wonder how many of them were lying outside in the sun and heat drinking alcohol rather than hydrating and staying inside at the hottest points? How many went swimming in unsafe areas of rivers, lakes and the sea? People behave like idiots when it gets hot and put themselves in dangerous situations and don't look after their own health.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/02/2023 09:33

2020 we had amazing weather and I had to work so missed a lot of it. 2021 the summer was disappointing and overcast and that affected my mood so a summer that felt like a summer was amazing for me but I appreciate we’re all different. Start planning now and invest in a good fan.

JustFrustrated · 10/02/2023 09:33

Okay, why are so many people lying about the heat and it only being "for a few days"?

The facts show you're wrong.

London, and many other areas, were literally burning becuase it was so hot and so dry for so long.

It was the hottest summer on record.

It was the warmest YEAR on record.

No, it wasn't "middle east" temperatures. But that's a stupid analogy anyway. Hot countries are set up for hot weather.

However, OP, just buy an air con unit.

It seems that the sun worshipers on here seem to be a bit triggered by someone saying they hate these horrendously hot summers.

Q a condescending comment. I love the heat and the sun because I live on a beautiful but often rainy island. I do love to see the sun, it lifts your mood and in the northern hemisphere we need to be lapping it up safely when we can get it as we are vitamin D deficient generally. Also I have psoriatic arthritis and the cold, damp weather means a lot more pain a lot more often. I do love a food laze in the sun but it’s pretty reductive of you to say all the heat fans just want to get a tan and f everyone else. Pointless worrying is pointless.

HollyMollyPolly · 10/02/2023 09:33

MockneyReject
My point is, that heat like we had last year, affects some more than other.
Clearly. We are all different. Sounds like our jobs are similar but you clearly had a worse time of it than me.

And, yes, to the PP who sneerily dismissed the 'financial' aspect - those in sub par housing and manual jobs are likely to be the less well off, aren't they?

But aren't these the same people who will struggle with heating bills in cold weather? Personally I find keeping cool a lot cheaper than keeping warm.

I'm not a sunworshipper, I'm as pale as they come and can't sit in the sun at all, but I love it when it's hot. The only places I've been where it was unbearable was Alice springs in Australia, the heat was something else, dry and searing, I literally couldn't leave the shade/move or Singapore, more humid but omg, I remember walking down the street intentionally making shops automatic doors open for a cold blast of Aircon. Both places were too hot just to function properly. I've never experienced anything remotely close here.

MarkWithaC · 10/02/2023 09:33

I'm in London and, apart from the two-day mini-heatwave in July, I really don't remember it being that hot Confused

OrangeClubTub · 10/02/2023 09:33

I’m with you 100% in London it was absolutely unbareable last summer, I was absolutely miserable the whole time. I dislike summer in general anyway but last year was awful. I’m dreading this coming summer too. You’re not being unreasonable, half the people on here digging you out will be on threads complaining in August!

Mirabai · 10/02/2023 09:34

We had one really hot day last summer.

Using Europe-wide stats is bizarre considering how much hotter and longer the summers in Mediterranean countries are.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/02/2023 09:34

The problem for me last year was the humidity. It was really high and carried on for ever. Until October. I hate humid heat. It’s so draining.

Intrepidescape · 10/02/2023 09:35

Is it possible to install a wall aircon unit in your bedroom?

I live in Australia and for many years didn’t have air conditioning and it would get over 40 degrees celcius. I bought a portable unit and had it vented to the window (I had a company make Perspex that would fit the window unit so I could vent it properly - otherwise it wouldn’t work).

My unit cost over $1000 - but it was so worth it as I can’t sleep if it’s hot.

I know that when it gets over 30 degrees in England everyone complains - but your houses are built to retain heat so I understand how awful it can be.

Sapphire387 · 10/02/2023 08:03

Come on, now. Yes it was boiling here in London. For less than a week. Bit melodramatic.

Depends where you live. I'm at the top of Hampshire & it was very hot, sticky and still for a long period.

I like the heat, but not where I live, I can't move house at the moment, so have to suck it up for now.

we don't all live in London or in the North, so quit saying it wasn't hot, it bloody well was HERE

Berlinlover · 10/02/2023 09:35

I’m peri menopausal and hated the extreme heat too. Luckily I work in a supermarket where it was lovely and cool all day, although walking to and from work was torture. Having said that I’m still looking forward to the summer.

Surely most of the excess heat deaths would have unfortunately been the elderly and the ill? The kind of deaths you have outlined would be a very small percentage of the deaths. Heat usually kills vulnerable people.

Deathraystare · 10/02/2023 09:36

Thinking of a holiday?

Well there were posts on MN about which were the best beaches.

Most of them in Scotland where you might be lucky in Summer to take your coat off (but not your cardi!).

I suffer in the heat. I seem to bloat up and now use those pull on bras rather than try to fit normal bras. I have to make sure I am well hydrated too.

I think PPs are referring to the extreme, unusual temperatures, which were only for a few days. Rather than the wider situation of temperatures that were more typical lasting for an unusually long time.

jessycake · 10/02/2023 09:38

@LakieLady We got some command hooks , they did eventually fall off because of the heat , just hung the stuff over some windows and just closed them with the little gap that my windows allow and still be secure ,the back door I bought some rings with clips and a bit of plastic rod on command hooks . it wasn't an attractive look outside and the house is a bit dismal inside .

chocorabbit · 10/02/2023 09:38

Overthebow · 10/02/2023 08:00

Do you live in the Middle East? In the UK it really wasn’t that bad. A couple of weeks of hotter than usual weather but still not high high temperatures.

This.

I’m with you (and also in London). There was one day when it hit 40 but apart from that 🤷🏻‍♀️
