Do travel insurance really need this much info?

Just for a week in Tunisia (we're visiting family before anyone questions why we would go there).

I declared our current medical conditions - DS has depression and autism. I have reflux and tachycardia. All good.

I realised after that DD (4 months) was prescribed infant gaviscon when she was 2 weeks old. Turned out it wasn't reflux, it was tongue tie. Rang insurance company to see if it needed to be declared. Yes it does. As does every single ailment we have visited a doctor or received medication for in the past 2 years!

They want to me to declare everything from a uti in pregnancy, cervical ectropion, bv, thrush, infected toenail, infected fingernail. I asked if he was sure he needed all of that and he said he definitely does. Poor bloke had to hear all my bloody gynae issues, I was so embarrassed 😳

Debating whether I need to phone back as I forgot to declare DH low sperm count.

Is this normal? I don't remember doing this before or maybe I was doing it wrong.

@lieselotte I had a really bad experience with Holiday Extras. I went to A&E on the eve of my summer holiday as I had chest pain. I was given the all clear to travel by the hospital consultant. They told me to get a non urgent GP appointment when I got back from holiday.
HE then cancelled all my holiday cover as they deemed me to have an ongoing health issue - they would’ve paid out for cancellation but would not allow me to travel, despite what the hospital said.

It just so happened that I had additional cover on another policy otherwise I’d have been in a very difficult position. The other insurer was fine with the situation.

@lieselotte Stay Sure will allow you to exclude pre-existing conditions. You still have to declare them but pay a lower premium if you don’t want insurance cover for them.

I have been on holiday with a relative who was transported home in air ambulance.
When you're with someone who is that ill you do not want to be worrying about money on top of everything.
It may take longer to get your policy but given that they will be the ones stumping up the cost of an air ambulance (in our case on top of a ten day stay in hospital with tests and scans etc) I think they are entitled to decide whether to insure you.
To the poster who didn't declare the doctor visit for the headache..... how bad was the headache that it needed a visit to the doctor?
To the poster who had the gall bladder out, I actually think this is a big thing not to declare.
We were extremely grateful that the insurance company just took over and dealt with everything

ExistenceOptional · 10/02/2023 16:46

I agree that going to the Dr for a headache is extremely unusual.

With regards to the gallbladder, pp said it was taken out years before. The screening questions only ask for information from the past 2 or 5 years so I'm assume it wouldn't have met that criteria.

I buy Tesco travel insurance online and only declare pre existing, outstanding for diagnosi ma or assessment and any treatment in last year I think?

Op look at the section on pre existing stuff. -I think your advisor is wrong

Then when doing the quote it will say you don't need to declare.
I have a condition that I declare that when I type it in it says you do not need to answer any questions on this condition.
If in any doubt declare it and let them decide

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/02/2023 17:59

To the poster who had the gall bladder out, I actually think this is a big thing not to declare.

Why? Mine came out 9 years ago and I'm not going to get gallstones now!

Cosyblankets · 10/02/2023 18:16

I suppose it depends on how the question is worded. Have you ever had an operation? Answer would be no. Have you ever had any medical conditions requiring surgery? Answer would be yes

Sorry that makes no sense I've just read it back. Duh!
Have you got a medical condition? No
Have you ever had an operation? Yes

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/02/2023 18:37

I thought it was me not understanding!

cakeorwine · 10/02/2023 18:40

I wonder how many people do declare what they need to - as a lot of people have either been ill or are currently on hospital waiting lists.

It would also be interesting to look at the pay out statistics from insurance companies

bigbluebus · 10/02/2023 18:54

I remember declaring DHs gall bladder removal to an insurer (he'd had the op 12 months earlier). They replied that he wouldn't be covered for anything gall bladder related. I thought well that's fine because he hasn't got a gall bladder anymore so it's unlikely to cause a problem.

Must be different underwriters as the wording is different on the one I bought.
Its point number 1. that they are saying needs everything to be declared.

Wow that is crazy. Maybe they've changed since last year. Poor you, I'd be hard pushed to remember all of mine and the kids!
