To ask if you ever accepted a job offer then was offered a better one elsewhere?

And what you did?

I’ve had a number of interviews and got a number more applications out there. I’m not assuming I will get any of them, but just want to be prepared if I find myself in the above predicament.

What do you do if you are offered a job only to be offered a better one the next week/month?!

Yes, I did. I’d wanted a particular job for ages (job A). However, got an interview for job B who then offered me the job. Unexpectedly, job A called back and offered me the post so I just emailed job B and withdrew my acceptance. Bizarrely, job C then offered me a post via the telephone so I also declined. It was raining jobs!

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats you didn’t take a job paying 200£ more in case you were thought of as rude?? That’s crazy tbh 🙈

No. I turned it down because I considered it would be unprofessional not to do so.
Ir would also have been rude, but that wasn't the reason I rejected it. Sorry if my post wasn't clear.

Does anyone here have morals, or is eveyone happy mucking people around just because 'I am more important and my needs are soooo much more pressing than those of this company whose time I have jst wasted?

I work for large multinationals and have been through restructuring so many times - as a consequence, I have the same loyalty to them as they have to me.

yumscrumfatbum · 09/02/2023 09:38

Yes with my first job. I accepted a job and was offered another a few days later. The subsequent job was closer to me in a newer more dynamic set up. I was honest and they understood my reasons.

Oblomov23 · 09/02/2023 09:48

Yes of course, most people will. Then you just turn one down, politely.

calmama · 09/02/2023 10:21

So I guess the vast majority choose the difficult conversation and go for the one they want. For what it’s worth, I have very sound morals and am very loyal too, but I’ve also been screwed by my current employer for nine years (hence the flurry of applications!) so I’ve changed my stance a bit.

Here’s hoping I get one of the ones I want to most!

When I left college years ago I got offered an admin job at a solicitors firm (very awkward as my dads friend was a solicitor there at the time) they offered me £4,000 a year back in 1995

Then I went for an interview at a firm of accountants who offered me £7000 for 4 days a week and paid for my AAT qualifications so I took that

My dad phoned his friend up and he was ok about it said it totally understood and would have offered more but couldn't as that was the wage for a junior secretary and they couldn't pay more one than the other

Incidentally my friend works at a solicitors and it is very hard work for not much money some 28 odd years on

Tell the outstanding applications that the clock is ticking and that you would appreciate them concluding with you ASAP. If they are serious about your application then they will do what they can to try to secure you, or at least discount you so that you know where you stand
