Lumea on 12 year old

Hi dd has a VERY pronounced moustache. She is VERY aware of it and has asked me for help. She is very, very pale, her facial hair is really dark.
She got a terrible rash when we tried facial depilation cream (sensitive range) at christmas. She has a very low pain threshold so I am thinking wax would be a nono. She absolutely refuses to go to a salon for anything like threading.

AIBU to be considering using my lumea on her? Has anyone else used it in this kind of situation?
Or has anyone got any other suggestions please?

Threading is horrendous pain for a young girl so stay away. I would probably try bleaching the hair and then, with a tiny grooming scissors, cut as close to the skin..do not shave as it will come back thicker and stubbly.
I don't know much about laser treatment at this age, or what it even entails, or if it's painful but it is something that I would enquire about, for sure.

junglemaze · 09/02/2023 01:50

I would get refferal to your dermatology clinic, also

larkstar · 09/02/2023 01:56

I would visit your GP and ask if there could be a hormonal problem.

GlamGiraffe · 09/02/2023 01:59

Äž Ave my 12 year old niece mice for facial and e beside body hair.. never received it back. She's living it.
You dd has compatible hair types and coloring. She will need to shave began treatments but go for it. Results are good. She will hadn't to top up pethically and mustn't use once she gets a tan and must wear regularly applied spf 50+All dunny times on The are but worth it if its a good half for life smart

Valhalla17 · 09/02/2023 02:00

There is zero point doing it now given all the hormonal changes she will inevitably be going through. It won't last and it will be painful. What about some facial hair removal cream? And yes see the GP to check if any hormone issues causing the hair.

BoxOfCats · 09/02/2023 02:05

I would try sugaring instead of waxing, it's much more gentle.

Definitely do something permanent if you can afford it. I've spent my whole life waxing/threading/plucking my moustache it's been the blaine of my life.

All three methods about required you to allow the hair to grow a bit and as a fellow pale skinned dark hair girl it's so frustrating.

I'd look into professional Lazer or electrolysis for her. If I think of the amount of money over the years I've spent I could cry

Less permanent but better in my opinion than waxing is threading ( can also treat her to having her eyebrows shaped) it does hurt at first but so does spotting stray hairs at times you can't do anything about it. Waxing easy enough to do yourselves if she's shy, hard wax that you don't use any strips best. Also treat her to a good magnification mirror and a twezerman pair of tweezers they are well worth the money

HoppingPavlova · 09/02/2023 02:37

I’d start at GP to check there is no underlying issue as this sounds a bit odd. If not, I’d try laser.

clairelip · 09/02/2023 02:44

Also look at YouTube and find her beauty 'gurus' that don't use filters. Reassuring her that's she's not a freek or the only one of her age group having this will help a lot. I now now I wasn't alone in this but as a child convinced myself I was and it really affected my self confidence

ThatWardrobe · 09/02/2023 06:06

You have to remove the hair first to laser anyway for it to be effective.

ChillinwiththeVillains · 09/02/2023 06:17

Apparently the risk of hormonal pigmentation reaction (like with pregnancy hormone changes) means that lumea etc. aren’t a good idea until 16 or so. I think sensitive hair removal cream would be the best option, but wish you luck. My mother didn’t really address my tash and sideburns. Wish she had. Laser changed my life!

DollyDabble · 09/02/2023 06:20

I agree with BoxOfCats · if you look at the history of NADS, it was created especially for younger daughters who had dark body hair.

Goatinthegarden · 09/02/2023 06:27

I don’t see what’s wrong with using the lumea. I’ve had my lumea four years and it’s an absolute game changer. I have very dark hair that I spent all my teens and twenties fighting with waxing, shaving, epilating, etc and was never satisfied.

I used to use the Lumea every few months after the ‘boot camp’ and I just realised the other day that I haven’t used it for over half an year and the hair hasn’t reappeared. I don’t even think about my body hair any more.

My understanding is the darker the hair and the paler the skin, the better it works. I have a kind of light olivey skin with very dark hair, if your daughter is pale, it should work well.

Dinogeorge · 09/02/2023 06:31

I don’t know if hormones at that age will affect the re growth but I recently started shaving my face to get rid of peach fuzz and it definitely hasn’t grown back thicker or darker so could be worth a try?

28January · 09/02/2023 06:34

Definitely not threading. I had it done once, I swear childbirth was less painful!

HoodieBell · 09/02/2023 07:01

I used it on some little whiskers I had, it worked really well. Never came back.

FudgeJudy · 09/02/2023 07:06

I don’t have experience with the Lumea although I’m extremely tempted to buy one.

For now, I’d try dermaplaning blades. They give a very close shave while being gentle on the skin.

OP says she's tried that

Attictroll · 09/02/2023 07:10

I would bleach for now ... less painful needs a bit of regular up keep but feels more gentle

Reluctantadult · 09/02/2023 07:13

Nothing wrong with trying a lumea. It's not going to do any harm and doesn't hurt. It didn't work on me but I'm talking about coarser chin hairs.

Bleach is incredibly noticable

I have a friend who bleaches. All it does is draw attention to her moustache because the colour is almost luminous.

rainbpwcupboards · 09/02/2023 07:53

I wouldn't wax at home either. I think waxing in salon is probably the best way - it gets less painful and it's very quick done well

Yes and it looks even worse with make up on I find.

Hi OP - just wondering if you went ahead and layered the hair and how it is now? Thanks
