Booster class during half term

DC school have just sent out an email asking that the year 6's attend booster classes next week, during half term. They "strongly encourage" the children to attend. They already run after school booster on tuesdays that they pretty much forced her to attend, as well as homework set every day. We will of course still do the homework and revision, but I'm really reluctant to send her in during half term aswell, she really deserves a break(has sen and has worked really hard so far this year)
So, mumsnet, AIBU in not sending DD for yet more extra lessons?

As an ex primary teacher, the situation with SATS has become worse over the years. Sats only boost school LEAGUE TABLES and perception of a schools value.
So they increasingly drill and harass Children just to make their own reputations better.

I left primary in 2017, where schools were even beginning to pull kids from PE for extra SATS practice-

Have a week off and don't worry about it. It's the Head who drives the kids for her own reputation, it won't help your daughter.

Do the SATs not determine what sets the children go in in secondary school?

SAT results are for the school, they do not impact your child's education.

Boneweary · 09/02/2023 08:34

Not all secondary schools set, and not all that do set base the sets on SAT results.

This is one for you to decide, you know her. You need to have the courage of your convictions!

Y 6 stats are about the school's reputation and achievement rather than the kid's individual achievement. Unless your child is falling behind, I wouldn't.

The secondary schools I know that set all get the Y7 to sit CAT tests in the first half term and set off those results, not the SATS.

SATs do have a role in GCSE predictions but that still doesn't make it necessary to hold half term revision sessions. Cramming for the tests is not done to help kids get a better GCSE prediction. It's done for the primary school to look good.

Not a chance. I bet the teacher doesn't want to be there either

My thoughts exactly.

If you're only just hearing about it now, my guess is that this is a response to parental demand/complaint/panic. Possibly precipitated by last week's strike and not helped by memories of Covid closures. Lots of parents are convinced their children are light years behind and are (rightly, of course) angry that the govt promise of catch up support never happened. I know you say your school provision in Covid was thorough but to me that suggests a school in an affluent area with parents who do take everything offered but want much more on top. But then of course there will be others who don't want it or can't access it. School will prob get complaints either way.

They've said it's not compulsory. I would just say thank you so much for the offer but you feel your child is on track and needs the break more than the extra lessons.

Unless this is actually school led and they're an aggressive exam factory. In which case I'd just ignore it. I do holiday lessons in both circs - ie, when I feel it's needed and when parents ask. The first reason would always be optional. As is the second, I guess, but I'd be more upset if a parent asked for a lesson then didn't send their child in.

For GCSE or A level exams absolutely. Year six absolutely not. Especially if it has anything to do with SATs. If my child needs intervention for a specific area or needs additional support I would send them to before or after school extra lessons but not in the school holidays.

OP No, it doesn't determine sets in secondary schools at all.in fact as a previous poster said, secondaries tend to distrust SATS results and do their own assessments.
I've worked in a few secondaries now, and not found ONE that sets in all subjects in year 7.
I would say a few only set for Maths.
