Hi there first time poster looking for advice opinions on moving to uk from donegal Ireland. I have 3 kids 2 primary aged and a toddler. Recently we have been concidering moving to uk (plymouth area). I have friends living close to there and family a wee bit further a field although neither have children. Anyone made this sort of move that would be able to advice me on school systems , areas to avoid ect... I have started to apply for jobs and have had 2 offers already so for work i should be okay in that respect. My husband is thinking of moving over a month or too before hand to sort out housing ect. Thanks ☺️

Don’t do it. It’s a terrible place to live. I lasted a year before moving away.
Most of the ‘bigger’ shops that they used to have in the city centre have now closed. If you want to go clothes shopping you have to go to Exeter.
Which areas to avoid? The whole area to be honest.

I've only been living here for a couple of months, but have family here. We moved from somewhere beautiful but remote and somewhere that felt "small minded".

Ramblings...

Plymouth feels much more vibrant and although there are things I miss, the good outweighs the bad. We're walking distance of the city centre (so Station, The Hoe, the Barbican, Sutton Harbour etc. Housing is good value, there'es lots of green spaces and there's plenty to do.

On the negative side, certain things feel very geared towards the Armed Services (especially the Navy) and they don't seem to like women vicars!

Lots of great schools in Plymouth. The Mutley area is very student heavy and is where most Uni accommodation is. Personally I'd opt for Plymstock or Plympton. Bus services are good and lots of beaches and Moorland on your doorstep.

Thankyou everyone for your replys. It seems like its kind of you either love it or hate sort of place. We currently live in my husbands hometown in a tiny area with no transport links, very little shops and nearly no jobs. I will look at some of the other areas suggested too. As far as schools go can children be enrolled when we move over even if its not before the start of September ? Its done completely different over here where we just apply direct to the school and thats it. Thanks

I went to uni in Plymouth and I really like it but as someone said earlier Plymstock and Plymton are the nicer places to live or a little further out in Ivybridge.

You’re joking. Exeter is awful.
