Went out of date on 1st Feb.
Mis-read it when I bought it last week.

Baked potatoes for us tonight then!

No, maybe 1 or two days past but 5 days is pushing it!

ShimmeringShirts · 06/02/2023 18:00

Use by - not suitable to be consumed after that date (though most things can stretch 1-2 days after a use by date if kept refrigerated)

Best before - fine to eat however long after providing no signs of deterioration, just might not taste as good as it did before best before end date.

But frankly I’m now at the point where even if it’s a week past it’s use by date I’d still chance it.

SelinaKant · 06/02/2023 18:00

I've had that before and it's nice, but 5 days out of date - no.

IWonderWhyIBother · 06/02/2023 18:03

If it smells ok, yes.
We had soured cream yesterday that was use by 31/01/23.

torquewench · 06/02/2023 17:16

I wouldn't have eaten it when it was in date, tbh 🤣

☝️
This 100% 😂

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 06/02/2023 18:33

To be honest I wouldn't have eaten it before it went out of date

Angelik · 06/02/2023 18:35

Clearly none of you have been poor! I would if it had been in fridge.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/02/2023 18:47

Nope. The 4th or even possibly 3rd yes, but not a nearly week ood.

CottonSock · 06/02/2023 18:48

I wouldn't and I have low standards. Just because it's meat it doesn't mean it can't go off.

I’ve been poor! So poor, in fact, that missing a few days of work meant not being able to buy food and I had a kid to think about. So this makes absolutely no sense. Have YOU ever been poor/in a shift job where you don’t turn up you don’t get paid?

Oysterbabe · 06/02/2023 18:54

I would eat it.
I'm yet to see one of these threads where I wouldn't eat it though, to give you a gauge on my standards are with these things.

dogdaydown · 06/02/2023 19:24

I'd eat it

SparkleBrows · 06/02/2023 19:34

It sounds horrible, but yes, with no meat or dairy in it , if it looks OK I wouldn't waste it.

AffIt · 06/02/2023 19:38

I would, but I have the constitution of a rhinoceros and a distinctly laissez-faire approach to best before dates (I ate a yoghurt that was six weeks out of date the other day, it was fine, I'm still alive).

My OH, on the other hand, would recoil like a vampire meeting sunlight. We all have different tolerance levels.

(Apart from chicken and pate - DO NOT fuck with either chicken or pate.)

SoShallINever · 06/02/2023 19:43

No, it's not worth being ill.
I'd have toast or cereal if there was nothing else.

Smidge001 · 06/02/2023 19:43

I'd eat it, it's properly sealed and non-meat so I'd take the risk.

Floofydawg · 06/02/2023 20:02

torquewench · 06/02/2023 17:16

That's exactly what I thought! 😂

Hoppinggreen · 06/02/2023 20:04

No I would not.
With meat it’s easy to tell but with that I think you would be well into it before you realised it tasted funny

MeinKraft · 06/02/2023 20:05

No I wouldn't. The worst case of food poisoning in our house was from very slightly out of date pre prepared veg. I couldn't believe how unwell friendly little vegetables can make you!

That's far more likely to be a hygiene issue than because it was slightly out of date. Most veg doesn't have a date on it. If it looks OK it is OK

Arewestill · 06/02/2023 20:39

Thanks for all your replies. It looked fine, but I decided not to chance it. When I tipped it into the food bin, you could smell the sauce was a bit off, so I'm glad I didn't discover that halfway through it.

20viona · 06/02/2023 20:45

No way

MeinKraft · 06/02/2023 20:48

@SparkleBrows I know whole veg doesn't go out of date but this was a mashed parsnip and turnip thing

SherbetDips · 06/02/2023 21:12

that honestly looks like someone’s already eaten it and vomited/shat it back out. So no I wouldn’t eat it.
