Get Out of My Life...: But First Take Me and Alex Into Town
by Anthony E. Wolf

Untangled by Lisa Damour is excellent (specifically about teenage girls, though much of it applies to boys.
Also found 'Get out of my life...' an interesting read.
And 'The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read' by Phillippa Perry, though that's not teen specific.
How to Raise an Adult by Julie Lythcott-Haims is also interesting.
I love a self-help book!

I came on to say this.
I don't agree with all of it but it gave me lots of food for thought

Also the How to talk so your kids will listen and listen so your kids will talk.
While this is a kids parenting book, I came back to it when they hit puberty as I realised that some of the good stuff they say really applies to teens.

I was going to say How to Talk - there is a specific teen edition, though from flicking through it doesn't look that dissimilar to the younger kids' one if you already have that. If not get the teen one!

Great thank you!
very much a mum in need right now and trying hard not to let my own hurt over take them! Why oh why is there no instruction manual

I came to say 'Get out of my life...' and 'How to talk...' too! The former is a little old-fashioned in parts but I found it reassuring that consistency would eventually drip through and I'm (finally!) seeing it pay off now that my DS is nearly 16.

OP, the teen years are a wonderful, and heartbreaking roller coaster of a ride. You are not alone.
Go and find the teenagers board.
Some of the posts are more extreme behaviour, but there are a lot of us around who just find the daily life with teens hard work for many reasons.

and I have one who is 20 and one who is 17, and yes they do come out the other end, and some of those things you taught them when they were little are still there!
(still waiting for my 15 year old to come out the other side, I suspect she might take a little longer.....)
