And foods that don't taste so good after frozen?

I think soup isn't as nice after it's been frozen what do you think is and isn't

I think this is Mumsnet’s AIBU forum.

I think it isn’t Mumsnet’s Chat forum.

I really think soups taste good after freezing! But curries I like also.

Whataretheodds · 05/02/2023 19:35

Soup is, curry is, stew is, lasagne is.

Anything that needs a crunchy texture doesn't work. Anything that's supposed to be quite liquid /mushy works.

ToastToastTea · 05/02/2023 19:36

Soups, casseroles, curry, bolognese, chilli, pulled pork, pies, pasty all freeze really well.

Things that don't freeze so well are creamy sauces and quiche.

Hoedowndom · 05/02/2023 19:38

Houmous freezes well. I get it free on Olio and stick it straight in the freezer. You can't notice the difference once it's thawed.

Bobbybobbins · 05/02/2023 19:39

I find fresh fish is mushy after it's been frozen.

Lcb123 · 05/02/2023 19:41

I think everything tastes better frozen, defrosted and heated - mostly as you’ve made it previously so feels like cheating!

YaWeeSkitter · 05/02/2023 19:41

Mashed potato

MadeForThis · 05/02/2023 19:43

Mushrooms are horrible after defrosting.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/02/2023 19:46

Spinach

Whammyyammy · 05/02/2023 19:58

Ice cream 🍦

Pinkypurplecloud · 05/02/2023 19:58

Depends on the soup - potato based soup will go gummy, anything with pasta or rice will fall apart, creamy tends to split or go grainy… but something like carrot and coriander or pumpkin or tomato is great frozen.

I find anything mince based freezes well - lasagne, cottage pie, chilli, bolognese sauce etc.

Soubriquet · 05/02/2023 20:00

I had a curry the other day that had been cooked and frozen on a different day.

It was delicious

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2023 20:00

Dh thinks the freezer ruins pretty much everything. Especially meat, or at
least it means it will need slow cooking once it’s been frozen. We barely use our freezer for anything!
he does do all the cooking so I don’t really care, it has ice cream and a bag of frozen peas in it, plus perhaps some ice pops from last summer.

HarlanPepper · 05/02/2023 20:01

bread, some cheese, pesto - I make big batches of pesto then freeze it in little pots, it defrosts really quickly and tastes like it was made that day

Unicorn2022 · 05/02/2023 20:03

I buy frozen avocado which is awesome mashed on toast when defrosted but disgusting texture unmashed so you couldn't have it on a salad or anything,

Pitta breads are better toasted from frozen as they puff up more and are easier to open.

Someone on here recommended buying chips from the chippy and freezing those to use in place of frozen chips. I tried it but wasn't impressed.

2013isback · 05/02/2023 20:16

good:
cooked pulses: beans, peas, lentils, edamame
most berries, mango, peaches, persimmons
corn kernels
prawns
pierogies
brownies, cake, cheesecake - best without icing
yeast breads, muffins, tortillas, pita
stock

bad:
breaded fried food
delicate (non-fatty) fish
scallops, oysters, mussels
watery fruit/veg (salad greens, cucumber, radish, tomato, citrus, melon, celery)
cheese
anything runny with starch in it
anything carbonated

I've not tried it myself but apparently mammoth meat is good - even after 35,000 years!

Home freezing, I try and avoid it. Never batch cook and normally just eat leftovers in the day or two after cooking. I think it fucks most things up a bit

Industrially frozen stuff seems to suit just about anything
