Childrens uni loans v cms WTF

So the government throughout a child’s life until 18 disregards any additional income due to re marriage. It’s cut and dry that one parent pays the parent with care according to their income. Eg, if the parent with care married a millionaire but if the other parent is still struggling, they still need to pay CMS. And to be fair I agree, it would not be the millionaires responsibility to pay for the struggling parent’s child.
A parent has to step up and pay no matter what.

so this brings me onto university maintenance loans …

at age 18 now the government decides that it’s household income that counts. So a parent that has worked part time and has nothing but because she’s married to a man with money her children won’t get the full loan allowance. They say it’s because parents should top up…. My children have used the other parents income to get the maximum loan they can, but it’s not the most and the other parent refuses to top up. I just don’t understand how until 18 it was parents income and now after 18 it’s household income.
ps I did not marry a millionaire! It was used as an example

They are just trying to limit their exposure by getting someone else to pay. I personally think that the full maintenance loan should be available to everyone, because not every parent can/will pay. At least you have three adults and if your children are older you could perhaps work longer hours or your child can work in hoildays/ weekend.

It's been like this for years. I went to uni 2006 and that was the rule then. I used my dad's address and income details, rather than my mum's to maximise my student finance.
