Too = as well as

To = to go, add to

Two = a number

Honestly, this is getting worse than there, their, they’re.

as you were.

Every time someone writes too instead of to I can’t help but read the sentence

eg. I can wait too go too the zoo

I can’t wait as well the zoo as well

It's slowly frying my brain.

You don't care about commas, or other punctuation though, clearly.
Why is that?

doublechocolatedigestives · 04/02/2023 12:58

"I'm board" instead of "bored".
So many people on my Facebook do this and it's infuriating

smooththecat · 04/02/2023 13:00

Text instead of texted, ‘he text me that the bin was overflowing’ etc.
Breath instead of breathe ‘I can’t breath’ etc.

Notcontent · 04/02/2023 13:00

I don’t know if there is any research on this, but I wouldn’t be surprised if people’s language skills - so not just spelling and grammar but also vocabulary - are worse than in the past. And that might be to do with people reading books or newspapers less and just getting information from Tik Tok etc, meaning they don’t see words written down.

ConsuelaHammock · 04/02/2023 13:03

Some people are dyslexic, some people aren’t very smart and some people didn’t listen at school? It’s not rocket science!

PuppyMonkey · 04/02/2023 13:03

Anyone else playing MN bingo on this thread? Grin

Have we had could of yet? Another think coming? Fazed?

seratoninmoonbeams · 04/02/2023 13:05

Oh, also, not the same but similar is the complete over use of the exclamation mark!!! All the time I see this!!!! Currently on another thread and it's driving me mad!!!! Calm down everyone!!!! I often see people responding to someone who has lost a loved one with 'RIP!!' Wtaf?

UnctuousUnicorns · 04/02/2023 13:07

Autocarrot can be a twit, two.

There's lots of research, yes. Lots of different reasons too.

The main ones, obviously, being poor (or totally absent) teaching and reinforcing of syntax /grammar in schools, which, in the UK, went on for generations. Then there are cognitive difficulties like dyslexia, often undiagnosed. Others include less reading, more computers etc.

You can also factor in predictive text. It has a far greater effect on people's SpaG than many would imagine. I'll go bare-knuckle with anyone on this website in terms of knowledge of the English language, but sure- my phone often chooses the wrong word for me, and no, it's a mammy forum, I'm not at the day job now, so I'm not going to check everything I've written.

This is the board for you. These posts are a thousand times more annoying than typos or grammar mistakes.

Do you think patronisingly pointing out the definitions will cure dyslexia?

No, they really aren't more annoying, not least because they are infinitely more rare. Going for the dyslexia excuse is just disrespectful to genuine dyslexics.

I expect the Chester Drawers will make an appearance shortly. To the sound of loud guffaws as we all wet ourselves at how thick other people are.

CreepingCrone · 04/02/2023 13:10

When people say they 'brought something from a shop', when really they bought it. I know it's petty and doesn't matter in the scheme of things, but it irks me!

MrsScrubbingbrush · 04/02/2023 13:12

"Can someone advice me please"

" I'd like some advise"

Ours of fun. Wink

007DoubleOSeven · 04/02/2023 13:18

I agree.

However, autocorrect on my phone does it's own thing and combined with the absolutely nightmare of writing on mn from a Samsung, it's often impossible to correct.

ExtraOnions · 04/02/2023 13:18

Discusted … what is that spelling about ?

As I said, just one example of the many reasons someone could get it wrong.

My mum was dragged up, never in the same school for longer than 5 minutes. She definitely made these kind of mistakes all the time. She was deeply ashamed and avoided joining in with things she would have enjoyed because of it.

These kind of threads put people off posting if they worry about their spelling and grammar and it's a horrible thing to do.

On Mumsnet, it's a long-standing in-joke. Started about 10-15 years ago.
Some people think it's done out of ignorance of the correct spelling but it's generally taking the piss out of the professionally offended.
Dunno about elsewhere.

Yep.
Is "going for the dyslexia excuse" another way of saying "playing the dyslexia card".
Because it's fucking offensive if so.

I actually think 'lose' is going to fall out of use in the very near future. Language evolves and I think that so few people seem to use 'lose' anymore that it's just becoming acceptable for 'loose' to be used instead.

This one I really don’t understand as they are not only spelled differently, but also pronounced differently. Which is not the same as “two, too, to”

BlackFriday · 04/02/2023 13:26

Lose/loose.
Practice/practise
"Tow" the line when it should be "TOE."

Coraline353 · 04/02/2023 13:28

AnchorWHAT · 04/02/2023 12:52

But they mean different things!

I know! It drives me demented but I'm swimming against the tide here. And like another PP said they're even pronounced differently. But it's just so common now I think we're going to lose 'lose' very soon.

BlackFriday · 04/02/2023 13:29

Oh, and people putting it down to "regional differences" when it's actually just wrong.
