I've accepted a new job offer.

It's 3 mornings per week. 4.5 hours each day.

Contract says 16.5 days including Bank hols. I've knocked off the 7 bank hols which leaves 9.5

But how does that work as I don't work a full day? Or am I being stupid?

Sorry I mean 16.5 days holiday!

Usually holiday is calculated and taken in hours for part time employees, so you book the number of hours you work that day off. In your case 4.5.

vivainsomnia · 03/02/2023 15:37

You are probably not entitled to the full bank holidays but a pro rata number.

Littlemountainhum · 03/02/2023 15:37

Do you work set days? Do you work on Mondays/Fridays when bank holidays tend to fall? Just wondering if they’ve calculated it based on that.

tbh it’s best to go back to HR and ask them to explain how they’ve calculated it.

Youcangoyourownwayyyy · 03/02/2023 15:37

Do you work Mondays?

I work every Mon, Tue and Wed. 4.5 hours each day.
There are 7 bank hols this year, so I deducted that leaving 9.5
But as I only work 4.5 hours, do I book "1 day" as it were for the morning I want as hol?

There’s a holiday entitlement calculator here www.gov.uk/calculate-your-holiday-entitlement. Part time is usually in hours with bank holidays included.

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 03/02/2023 15:40

Yes, that’s right. (Though most employers calculate holiday in hours as it’s so much easier for part timers to know where they are)

Holidayqueen1 · 03/02/2023 15:40

Congratulations on your new job op!
I work in HR and I’m also part time. As pp
said, normally when you’re part time, entitlement is calculated in hours with bank hols and prorated, but different companies do it differently and it’s v confusing!
it depends on whether you work specific days too as normally if a bank hol falls on a working day you’re expected to book as leave. If you’re starting part way through their leave year that will
impact etc.
I would go back and ask for clarification on how they’ve reached the figure they have. Good luck!

Chickenly · 03/02/2023 15:43

You work roughly 0.3 of full time. So, you’re entitled to roughly 0.3 of statutory holiday. Statutory holiday is 5.6 weeks, or 28 days. You’re entitled to roughly 0.3x that, so 0.3x28days is 8.4 days holiday per year.

Because your 1.5 days per week (three half days) are split across three separate days, it appears they have clarified that you’re entitled to 16.5 of your (half) days off across the year. You’re not entitled to every bank holiday because you don’t work full time.

SophiaLaB · 03/02/2023 15:46

If full time entitlement is 28 days you multiply your days (3) by 5.6 and that gives days due - this would be for a full 12 months. If you have started after the leave year it will be altered accordingly as to when you commenced employment. When you take an annual leave day they will pay you 4.5 hours for each days leave.

prettyrainbows · 03/02/2023 18:21

Thanks all. I will clarify with HR exactly what entitlement I will get as I start at the end of February.

I work similar hours. I get bank holidays (Mon is a work day) plus 12 of my working days.
