No, you don't need to know Maths to be a footballer

"NSPCC Number Day" at school again. 🙄

The letter says "children are invited to dress up as someone who uses maths/numbers in thier everyday jobs". Lots of girls dressed as engineers, builders, astronauts, chefs. Well done to them.

Of course, just like every single previous dress up for school day, all the boys turn up in full football kits.

"Coz there is a number on my shirt, and err, u need maffs to count the score."

It was depressing when the same thing happened at "dress up as your favourite character from a book day" but for me this is a new low.

What's the implication of the way you've spelt maths here, OP? I mean, I know but I'd like to hear you explain it.

Because she thinks only poor working class children like football.

There’d be a lot less upset if wearing rugby shirts was more common (as in popular, not vulgar)

Swiftswatch · 03/02/2023 10:46

God imagine getting this bent out of shape over what a little boy dresses up as.
Get a life.

This guy seems to have a decent understanding of maths, economics and how wealth distribution actually works.

I know.

I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.

I think OP needs a hobby

edwinbear · 03/02/2023 10:47

And frankly, if you find other kids dress down outfits 'depressing' you have far too much time on your hands.

Needmorelego · 03/02/2023 10:47

Anyone who does football sticker/trading cards will be using maths skills.

Footballers need to know the best angle to kick the ball in the direction they want it to go in.
That's maths.

Yes, that's definitely how that works.

Also football fans need maths to get drunk in the street and fall over because they have to "know" the gravitational force smacking thier faces into the pavement.

@Ronbo and you've proved my point.
You just hate football.

Ah so you hate working class people. Why not just say that OP.

No, she hates poor people and because she’s a bit thick she associates football with poor people

Haffdonga · 03/02/2023 10:50

As a mum of boys (now men) I know that mine would have been the ones in football kits on maths day, book day, world food day, Easter bonnet etc etc. Absolutely nothing to do with whether or not they knew which jobs needed maths or read books - but because they HATED dress up days. They used to beg me to pretend we'd forgotten about dress up days and go to school in uniform instead. Football kit was sometimes the only 'acceptable' alternative to them. So as a compromise football kit meant they 'joined in' with the 'fun', they'd had a discussion and thought about how the theme of the day related and went to school happy.
Both are now avid readers, high level mathematicians and
enthusiastic eaters of world foods so I dont think the football kit harmed them at all!

wonderstuff · 03/02/2023 10:51

Lots of maths in football. I’d personally question how dressing up is doing anything at all to improve maths. Honestly don’t understand primary obsession with dressing up.

takealettermsjones · 03/02/2023 10:51

What about when the coach tells them to run five laps in training. Voila: counting.

Seriously, maths is used in almost every aspect of life and I already can't be arsed with all the dress up days my DD has to do and she's only in nursery. So I'm running about a 50:50 ratio of actual effort vs. finding something she already owns and coming up with an explanation as to why it fits the brief. Sorry not sorry 🤷🏻‍♀️

GoodChat · 03/02/2023 10:52

OP why are you ok with children dressing up as chefs but not footballers?

Dotjones · 03/02/2023 10:52

I'm not sure how you can argue builders use maths but footballers don't. Some grunt lugging bricks about is hardly thinking "I've got X bricks with an average weight of Y kg per brick, therefore I'm carrying a total mass of Z. Bless me! This must mean I'm burning A calories. Fortunately there were B calories in my bacon sandwich this morning and C more in the D pints I had at lunch."

Princesspollyyy · 03/02/2023 10:53

I don't see the harm in this.

If this gets to you then seriously, you need more in your life.

Echobelly · 03/02/2023 10:53

I don't think you especially do, but try getting a lot of boys to 'dress up' in anything other than a football strip!

edwinbear · 03/02/2023 10:53

Even the 5 year olds? And it's their not thier. Perhaps you should be back in school OP.

Comefromaway · 03/02/2023 10:53

The OP is a snob

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 03/02/2023 10:53

Leave the kids alone OP. Maybe the parents didn't want to fork out for yet another bloody costume for no reason! Mine would go in whatever I had and I would make up a reason for it. 4 kids = 4 costumes in this house. Not cheap!

HiddenGiraffes · 03/02/2023 10:53

Dress up days are a load of expensive, time-intensive bollocks that don't in any way help children learn more. Putting on a footie kit they already own and making some tangential link seems fair enough.

You could also take the opportunity to show how your lessons are useful even to footballers, either in terms of post-match analysis, looking at angles etc, or managing money. That would require you to hate your pupils less, of course.

@wonderstuff

Well I’ve worked in education and childcare and it’s because it’s an easy win. Easy to take loads of photos and show them proudly as evidence of what you do. Oh yes look here’s lots of photos of the kids dressed in red white and blue to celebrate British values. Yes, here we are dressed in evacuee costumes to help learn about history. And here’s some photos of the kids dressed as chefs and book characters to promote numeracy and literacy.

Much much harder for the schools to do what they really should and actually work incredibly hard to promote these values and skills day upon day by supporting their most vulnerable students and helping staff be able to tailor the curriculum properly.

Rovinonmars · 03/02/2023 10:56

If you're getting worked up over what other people's children wear to a primary school dress up day, then you really have too much time on your hands.

Blimey @Ronbo, some snobbery there!
My 2 football kit wearing ds might just be the doctors who stitch up that drunk fan's face up. Hopefully their love of football doesn't impede their ability to calculate the dosage of anaesthetic needed.
