Sorry not AIBU, but posting for traffic…

I am getting these really sharp pins and needles in my feet, but which are now spreading to my hands. This is happening at night either when trying to get to sleep or it can wake me up in the early hours.
I went to the GP today (amazingly was given an urgent f2f appointment), who can’t explain it but has ordered a raft of bloods which I won’t now get the results back from until sometime next week.

yesterday I could even feel them while at work- tingling with tiny electric shocks.

I am mid 50s and otherwise well and on no meds. Any inisights?? TIA!

Good luck for next week.

Sounds likely to be hormonal given your age and the fact it only happens at night. Oestrogen issues can cause those sensations.

Findyourneutralspace · 03/02/2023 05:02

Where are you up to with menopause? I’m awake with restless legs and jolting every time I drift off and have been googling that it’s possibly hormonal (I’m mid 40s but thinking I’m heading peri-wards)

This is a common symptom of vitamin b12 deficiency which should show up in your blood tests.

Thanks all, doctor google had me fearing the worst but your responses are reassuring. Menopause- I would say I am right in the midst of it!

Sounds like a vitamin B12 deficiency. This is how mine was discovered. If your body has lost the abilities to manufacture B12 in the gut, this is one of the symptoms. I had a course of injections for a week and now have B12 injections every three months. Have been fine since. I was going to say that pins and needles in your hands can be a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, but since it started in your feet, it’s unlikely. Hope your tests come back to show it’s something simple.

I had exactly the same thing OP and my bloods uncovered an underactive thyroid.

Likely to be a deficiency. People have already said b12 but could also be magnesium, potassium or even iron. I’d recommend b-12 injection, magnesium lotion and a hefty vitamin pill and see if that knocks it on the head.

Thanks everyone! I should get my blood results back tomorrow….🤞
