It’s a parking one !

So we have a drop kerb into our drive with double gates.

for the last few months the parking on our street is getting worse, obviously newer neighbours, people having more than 2 cars.
So cars from down the street have been parking up our end of the street obviously because there’s no space near there house.
I get this, I also get you can park anywhere without obstruction to a property

so my problem is
from where my double gate ends to next door gate starts there’s about (off my head) 6ft space.
so people have started using this space to park
but ! The cars that do it hang over into my drive and we have to get out at an angle. Also to top this they park on the other side off the gates outside our house, i we have to edge out really careful because we can hardly see cars coming up the street

AIBU to leave a note. ? To say
please don’t park overhanging my drive, so I have to struggle getting out of my own drive
Any problem doing this, then knock on and discuss it.

Contact your council and ask for an “H” bar to be painted. Basically it will define the no parking area in front of your drive.

GinClassHeroes · 03/02/2023 00:39

Temporarily take to parking over the entrance to your own drive.

Roundabout78 · 03/02/2023 00:40

Of course yanbu. They’re partially blocking your dropped curb and drive which is illegal.

Seasider2017 · 03/02/2023 10:00

ive been on councils site since recommended
“temporary No more applicantions are being taken, due to staff shortage “

just my luck this

You can buy line marking paint online, it's really cheap. Someone near me painted their own H-line using it.

No idea if it's legal to do it though.

SaltnPeppaPig · 03/02/2023 10:20

Are they actually over your dropped kerb or just in a bit between your dropped kerb and your neighbour's dropped kerb?

This. Does your dropped kerb cover the whole width of the gates? I think if not, you're being a bit cheeky trying to claim all that space as yours for drive access and saying that nobody else can park there.

purpledalmation · 03/02/2023 10:41

Park outside your gates on the road. May deter them for a while.

ClaudiaWankleman · 03/02/2023 11:06

Are they parking over the dropped kerb? If so, YANBU.

If you have a parking area that exceeds the width of the dropped kerb then YABU - you should always be entering and leaving at an angle (and it was probably silly of you to have the double gates anyway).

KarmaStar · 03/02/2023 12:34

Doubt any car owners locally will feel sorry for you having to drive carefully out of your double gates when they can't park near their own homes.

Omg op has gates! She deserves everything she gets then.

While we're making assumptions- Perhaps these people can't park on their own double drives as they have 4 luxury cars and 2 motorbikes

I have no idea why people feel the need to post snarky comments like this. The OP is actually being helpful having off road parking as she is not having to use the spaces on the road. Some houses have off road parking and some don't. It doesn't make one person better than another. Poor parking makes things difficult for everyone.

Hoppinggreen · 03/02/2023 12:47

If they are parking over the dropped kerb then they are in the wrong. You probably aren’t supposed to but I would draw a line myself and deny all knowledge if the Council contacted me about it

Tiani4 · 03/02/2023 12:56

Unfortunately you can't paint your own white T bars in the road Grin

You can email in to council and request this, they will have a generic email address even if their forms aren't working atm - take photos of cars illegally parked over dropped kerb

If they aren't over dropped kerb then it's not illegal

If they are parked on the pavement then you can call council traffic enforcement as that's illegal
If they are overhanging into your actual drive they are in your property .., that would be photos and a harassment report if same people are doing it (civil action)
I'd be tempted to let gates swing out onto them as they are illegally parked on pavement or put a very large stone right at edge where they overhang if on my property if it didn't affect my driving in and out.

It sounds annoying as parking badly and reducing visibility as you pull out is a problem

StopFeckingFaffing · 03/02/2023 12:56

If the length of the pavement between the dropped kerb for your drive and the dropped kerb for your neighbours drive is long enough for a car to park then you can't really expect people not to park there

All parked cars can obscure your view when pulling out of a drive but that is life I'm afraid, you just have to take it very slowly and carefully

To be fair, people who have off road parking are taking up the same amount of space on the road as people who don't, because they have dropped kerbs so the front of their house is not available for parking.

Unless of course they have a double drive and only a single dropped kerb, and they go in at an angle, but it sounds like OP is expecting her entire double drive width to be kept free.

Tiani4 · 03/02/2023 12:58

@Seasider2017

You know the rules for parking threads - it's hard to visualise from description 1 We need a diagram which includes position of your drive, pavement, dropped kerbs and the naughty parking cars ... 🚗🚙

Frabbits · 03/02/2023 13:00

If they are leaving the dropped kerb free then you have no recourse at all.

Having to edge out to check whether there is traffic in the road is hardly the end of the world, is it.

No, a car parked end on takes up less room than side on with space at each end to manoeuvre in and out.

The car itself does, but a standard dropped kerb is usually about 4.5 metres at the kerb line, including the sloping stones at either side of the crossover, which can't be parked on.

Fairly sure it is not legal.

TerfOnATrain · 04/02/2023 02:42

Can you imagine if everyone started painting their own lines on the road 🙈

I’d paint “NO SCHOOL PARKING” at the top of my drive, that would teach those selfish bastard school drop off parents!

Everyonehasavoice · 04/02/2023 03:05

6ft!!! Didn’t we go metric early 70s. 🤪

If you have 2 metres between drives that’s enough to allow a view , ie sight line, to see cars and pedestrians.
No one is allowed to park there ….as it’s a health and safety hazard
Thats a planning and highways issue
You can ask the planning department to increase the width of your drop kerb to one metre either side of your drive entrance for safety issues …. Perfectly normal

The reality of course is that everyone will ignore this, but it’s illegal to park in front of a dropped kerb so a few photos when they so this, send to council, nice fine….job done.
