DS9 has recently taken to football and is becoming more aware of brands etc. he’s started asking for new football boots, Liverpool FC joggers, Air Jordan trainers etc all stuff that he could do with in the sense of needing footy boots but not the branded names all the time.

normally I say put it on a list for birthday/celebrations but it’s getting tiresome and he’s frustrated waiting so long.

aibu in saying no let’s head to shoe zone /primark? Or is this branded stuff to be expected?

Are there not a lot of knock-offs on vinted? I'd be worried I would be spending money on fakes that fall apart.

WonderingWanda · 03/02/2023 06:50

@Quinoawoman same here, my dd actually wanted one as her birthday present. It's a total gimmick and pretty poor as a water bottle, bit leaky and a faff to get the lid off and on. Tell your dd they are rubbish.

XelaM · 03/02/2023 06:50

it has to be branded for preteens/teens BUT as posters above said, it doesn't have to be new. Look on Vinted/ebay for good-value branded stuff.

Expected yes, you can and in my opinion should say no other than birthdays and Christmas. Also unless you are local to Liverpool, discourage his glory seeker support, as before too long he will want to visit Anfield for a game at vast expense.

Oh Christ yes, you can’t be too careful. He might actually like and enjoy football, like some kind of member of the working class. Yeuch.

Omg I'm so with you on "Air Ups". They are terrible and leaky and it says on their website that it's actually part of the design!!! 😳

DD2, 9yo, was also desperate for an air up bottle. To her credit, she saved her allowance, so she's just bought one. You can refer each other for 20% off, still a ridiculous amount for a gimmicky bottle, but it's her money.

DD1 is 13 and clothes are a big thing for her now. We do the clothing budget thing. She gets allowance, plus some extra. She's allowed to spend it on whatever she wants. I buy her school uniform, and basic clothing only. If she wants brands, or anything fancy, she either buys it herself, or if I'm buying her something, she can top up what I'd spend, and get the one she wants.

RedHelenB · 03/02/2023 07:10

Can you afford to get him branded stuff? There's a gap between primark trainers and air Jordans etc, why not take him to a shopping outlet and find something in the middle, addidas or Nike?

Orcubed · 03/02/2023 07:15

My 15yo has been playing football for 9 years. Plays for 2 teams and is now a referee. He has NEVER had a brand new pair of boots. Every single pair has been bought on Facebook/ebay/vinted.
Same for his branded tracksuits etc, all bought secondhand.
If he wants a current season shirt he gets it for his birthday (or saves up). I wouldn’t be able to buy him everything branded if I was buying it new.

Slimjimtobe · 03/02/2023 07:25

Mine is the same so he buys that fancy stuff from savings (he gets a small amount of money each week) or birthday money

he has branded shoes (sports direct or similar so not too expensive) and non branded tracksuit bottoms and then he had the sports tops (under armour or football branded)

Paper round. If the trainers are worth the work, then he can buy them with his earnings.

Where on earth is a 9 yo going to get a paper round? Where even has paper rounds anymore?!

Anyway birthday and Christmas or if it's a genuine need I might consider branded. Dts have grown out of their trainers. They want air force 1s which I will get for them because the last pair lasted over a year.

I meant to say that obviously people need to buy new to enable me to be able to buy secondhand and I’m not trying to virtue signal by saying that’s what I do, just showing that it is an option if you can’t afford to buy new but still want him to have the brands he wants

lovemedough · 03/02/2023 09:21

Same here! He's just turned 10 and has started asking for stuff. It depends if you can afford it or not?

I like seeing him all dressed up in his 'smart' clothes and I'm happy to spend my money on him. He's a sweet, kind and he's always grateful and never been entitled about it so why not?

BlueHeelers · 03/02/2023 14:56

Branded stuff is a waste of money. OK if you want to spend more on quality eg leather rather than plastic shoes etc. But YANBU to resist this “pester power”

Its pretty exploitative of young kids really.

mumonthehill · 03/02/2023 15:02

I think 9 is young however as dc got older and had more pocket money or birthday money i would say that i would spend say £40 on new trainers for you so if you want more expensive ones you have to put in the difference. Dc also buy from vinted and also sell stuff that no longer fits so they have money to buy something new.
