Sexist marketing

I received the following email from a large clothing brand this morning:

LIKE MATHS. BUT FUN
Outfit equations. Way more exciting than actual equations. Mix, match, layer how you like.

Is it just me or would anyone else have been annoyed by this message?

(To the retailer: Some of us 'ladies' actually enoy &/or are goood at maths. y'know....)

Was it a brand that inly does ladies clothing? If so, yes that is annoying and patronising.

Yarrawonga · 02/02/2023 10:40

Equations are a part of my job.

I think you are reading too much into it.

ThreeblackCats · 02/02/2023 10:42

There are enough real problems in the world. You don’t need to find them where they don’t exist.

rumship · 02/02/2023 10:46

Struggling to see the sexism here. May be find a hobby, your overstretching massively here.

Mamamia7962 · 02/02/2023 10:49

Wouldn't annoy me at all. Why does everyone need to be offended these days.

Essexgal2023 · 02/02/2023 10:56

Thank you. No, they do clothing for both sexes, but this particular communication was illustrated with pictures of ladies' clothing and was sent by direct marketing to a middle-aged woman (me). So I assum the message about not being good at maths was one that was specially targeted at people of my demographic.

I voted YANBU until I realised it’s an advert for adults. I can understand not wanting girls to see the message that maths isn’t fun, interesting or for women but, for adults, surely you’re not that easily manipulated?

JudgeRinderonTinder · 02/02/2023 11:38

I think you’ve miscalculated this one, OP.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 02/02/2023 11:38

There are many, many (too many) things that are sexist, even in the smallest form, in this world.

This email is not one of those things.

CatAmongThePigeon · 02/02/2023 13:08

@CohenTree I agree with you!

Whatatimetobealivetoday · 02/02/2023 13:09

This isn’t sexist it’s more of an insult to maths not women.

TheMatriarchy · 02/02/2023 13:10

Boring sexist trope that would never be used to market anything to men.

Maybe they sent the exact same advert to their male customers with pictures of men’s clothing? It is very common to do that and send the same context to different parts of your database with images that are relevant to the receiver.

You are massively overthinking

It wasn't really (for me) about whether it would change anyone's thinking, but I would put it in the same category as the old 50s adverts such as "Be a good cook and keep your man"...

That's what I was thinking.

That would annoy me too, OP.

I think it’s probably more to do with the anti-intellectual direction of our culture at the moment than a Barbie-esq “Math is hard” view of women particularly, though I also think it would still be harder to get a campaign like this approved for a men’s product.
