To bubble like a baby when watching The Royle Family?

DH thinks I’m insane but it gets to me in a way no other show can do.

I grew up a few miles outside Manchester and watching it takes me right back to being a teenager in the late 90s/early 2000s. Even the 2006 Queen Of Sheba episode where Nana dies is nostalgic. So much has happened since then in the word and in my personal life and watching.

It captures the Manchester working class family in the late 90s and early 2000s perfectly without making charicatures of it (like Shameless…). It’s my comfort show. Even the ‘funny’ bits that aren’t supposed to be emotional make me blub because my parents are just like the parents on TRF and my 2 grandma’s are are combined into one for the character of Nana.

It’s cheesy but watching it takes me right back to being 17 in my parents living room, exact same layout house and similar decor to TRF! Comings and goings of my sister and her boyfriend after having their first baby, us babysitting and loving it. Dad in front of the telly making witty jokes about what we’re watching and all of us killing ourselves with laughter. ”Have you had your tea yet?” from mum when I get home from being out with my mates. Genius.

Oh my goodness, yes! Similar age to you, northern GPs, it’s just how it was. I’m actually sad my DC missed out on the warmth and simplicity. The PP who talks about TV not being the same now it’s all in demand is spot on. And the impromptu visits and everyone being welcome. Life’s not the same now (and I wouldn’t say it’s better). Sob 😭

Rewatch it regularly and still use loads of the catchphrases, my ars!

I introduced DS18 to this a few months back. We've watched the whole thing twice since, he howls with laughter at it - particularly Jim singing "Happy birthday dear gay boy" to Antony and the Mambo No 5 episodes - and sees how brilliant it is.

The Queen of Sheba episode though, wow, cuts me up 😥too close for comfort but expertly written and acted

It’s a shame it ended up so crap. They all ended up caricatures especially Dave. From nice but dim to actually seemingly having SN.

Adore it and it reminds me of my family although we were down south not Manchester ! Love the mix of humour and pathos.

I love it. Especially the Christmas specials, I have to watch them every December. The Queen of Sheba episode is a real tear jerker- as is the episode where Denise goes in to labour and Jim sits with her on the bathroom floor calming her down.

They ruined Denise’s character as a mother. She was never super mum nor particularly in tune to her kids but the point was that she did care really, (remember her going on about wanting Baby David to go to uni) and Dave did all of the practical bits. In the later episodes they both just stopped giving a shit.

Yes that too. In one of the Xmas specials they didn’t even have the kids on Xmas day. In fact the little girl Norma wasn’t even mentioned.
