To not understand why there are no 1x night a week City London sop overs more readily available?!

I travel to London for work once per week. I need a bed for a night. Usually work late, arrive back at 8pm or so, bed by 9pm, out the door early between 6-7am. I am at a loss at how to make this work logistically.

Pre-Covid, the Travelodge was great. £50-70 a night, sorted.

Now the TRavelodges are double that, easily. Usually more £150+ upwards. Isn't this a lucrative and fairly steady income market. Any suggestions from anyone that does this weekly?! I don't really fancy a shared bathroom, youth hostel or a shared apartment on an Air B & B. There must be alternatives...

Most were glad of the extra income without the full blown commitment of a ft flatmate.

You can get cheap hotels here if you are happy to wait until the day you need it to book.

Try secret escapes. I can regularly find luxury hotels in central London for £100-£125 including breakfast.

Or stay a little bit further out. I can also get Holiday Inn Express for £75 but half an hour on the tube.

In the summer LSE let out rooms in their halls on Bankside- they are v basic but private and en suite. Available on booking.com.

FinalNameChange · 31/01/2023 18:31

I know you said you don't fancy hostels...but...years ago I used to stay at YHA St Paul's Youth Hostel while taking some 2-3 day self-funded training.

Very near St Paul's. 4-bed rooms, all female. Often 2 or 3 of my room mates were also professional consultant-types who just needed one night and didn't want to erode their profits.

It's clean enough, you could try it just once and see how much you hate it?

An old friend of mine used to look for pubs with rooms in London.

Head to a bar, have a one-night-stand, and then head off early.

Simple.

I've just had a look near me and Wimbledon / Richmond / Kew travelodge have rooms for around £85 in Feb.

citygal1986 · 31/01/2023 20:42

Thanks all these are really helpful.

I don't want to travel much further out after a day in the office. I travel 4.5 hours to get IN to the city, so I don't fancy another commute at night, ideally I want it to be walking distance within the square mile. The little perk of the travelling is that I get to go to the gym the morning I am there (if that's a perk) so I don't fancy tube journeys etc tbh.

Travelodge Old St is my absolute best in terms of location etc but it's become very spenny. The premier inn hubs are also upwards of £150 (always more expensive than TL) and Easy Hotel not far behind - again upwards of £110 (and that's without a window!).

Monopoly Accommodations mentioned above is the one I haven't ever heard of but seem reasonable. I am def not fussy for a night.

The uni campus at Barbican used to rent out their rooms over the summer (and they were lovely!) but seem to have closed down post covid. I have looked at the other uni campuses and they have v limited availability.

It has taken up most of my afternoon and I'm still no further forward.

Do you have the option to do two nights every other week? One night stays are always more expensive because all the costs have to come out - cleaning, laundry etc. staying a second night + shares out the cost over the stay. This is why you see 3rd night free deals for example.

Rainbow1901 · 31/01/2023 20:56

Some of the smaller hotels around Euston are around £85 per night and have ensuite Bathroom, double bed, tea/coffee facilities/Hairdryer/TV/Broadband. Nothing wrong with them for a night or so. Dh and I use them for weekend trips and concert/theatre trips. The advantage to these is that they are good for bus services and underground/rail services. You have feed yourself and there is no shortage of places to go for that.

Slowingdownagain · 31/01/2023 21:00

Travel lodges are definitely not as cheap as they used to be as just as crap!
bur try looking outside central London. Find somewhere on a convenient tube line and look a few stops out. Someone I know often stays in elephant and castle and finds it’s much more reasonable (plus convenient).

Slowingdownagain · 31/01/2023 21:02

Ok I see you want to be in very central London on a very limited budget. That’s going to be tricky no matter which way you turn it.

Are uni halls of residence … stayed in by university students? Except during the summer when they are let out to tourists.

www.roehamptonvenues.co.uk/accommodation/ for example - all year round. There must be uni conference centres further in.

citygal1986 · 31/01/2023 21:30

@Rainbow1901 can you recommend any? Euston would be fab but I really cannot see anything beneath £150 based on what I'm looking at now...

i replied and mn ate it

have you cleared your cookies in case you are seeing higher prices - not that much but maybe a bit

see also Apple Apartment, Leman Apts and White Row in Shoreditch. You might have seen them already of course.

SleekMamma · 31/01/2023 21:31

I stayed at st Paul's years ago. It was great!

parietal · 31/01/2023 21:35

these are the university halls but it is probably summer only

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/01/2023 21:45

If you book a week or two in advance, you can get the Travelodge Bethnal Green for around £90-110/night midweek. It's a 15-20 min walk into the City (or 1 stop on the tube/train). Colleagues have stayed there and thought it was fine.

LavenderHillMob · 31/01/2023 21:50

The Travel Lodge in Vauxhall is showing as £66 per night. I'll be honest it's not fab but it's a bed for the night...

The Rose pub nearby used to do a decent dinner a few years back but I've not been recently.

MMAMPWGHAP · 31/01/2023 21:51

Try The Cruising Association in Limehouse. It’s a club for amateur sailors but has decent premises with a bar and food. If I lived outside London and needed to stay on a regular basis I’d definitely consider this.

They have Ensuite B&B rooms from £54 per night including tea & coffee facilities & continental breakfast.

The Cruising Association

Costs £155 a year to join.

HundredMilesAnHour · 31/01/2023 21:52

Have a look at The Corner London City. It used to be the Qbic Hotel. It's opposite Altab Ali Park at Aldgate East and around £100/night. I have friends and family who stayed there when it was the Qbic and they really liked it.

Also look at New Road Hotel in Whitechapel, also around £100. (My neighbour is a chef here). Walking distance to the City (or 1 stop on the Elizabeth line), Pure gym 1 min walk away.

PermanentTemporary · 31/01/2023 22:21

I now want to read a novel called The Cruising Association

17CherryTreeLane · 31/01/2023 22:29

I recently booked the Hilton doubletree excel for £80. It says £120 online but if you book way ahead you get it cheaper.
