Eating disorder or healthy eating?

Wishfulthankin · 31/01/2023 11:12

I have a housemate. She says she healthy eating. I'm worried, she looks pale, tired and not as sparky as she was .

Breakfast: greek yogurt
lunch: grilled fish with salad or vegetables.
Dinner: chicken with Greek yogurt and half a pita bread.

Do I need to mind my own business or shall I raise my concerns with her?

This isn't the best place to ask as on here you'll be told that that menu for the day is obscenely greedy etc.

I’m not good at this sort of thing but god that sounds like hell to me- I’d be on the floor. I don’t know it’s necessarily a disorder, we all get hit with that January pressure to lose a few, but she is missing whole food groups there, not to mention, energy wise, there’s no fruit or anything to perk her up. How well do you know her, do you think you could have a conversation?

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 31/01/2023 11:18

Is she underweight?

CuteBear · 31/01/2023 11:19

I’m naturally petite and skinny and I would be starving on that. That would all be one meal for me. That looks way way less than 1000 calories so I’d say this is an ED or the start of one.

ToastAndButler · 31/01/2023 11:20

Depends on the portion sizes. The food choices are fine. Is she trying to lose weight?

SnarkyBag · 31/01/2023 11:21

I’d eat similar if I was trying to lose weight probably not a sustainable amount long term though. Like others say depends on portion sizes as the actual food itself is good

LaLuz7 · 31/01/2023 11:22

Temporarily, while trying to lose weight = ok

This restrictive diet as a way of life = unhealthy and disordered.

Is she visibly underweight? It is a recent change?

WeWereInParis · 31/01/2023 11:22

Depends on portion sizes and whether this is every day? Or is that just an example but over a few days it would be more varied?

happynewyear55 · 31/01/2023 11:24

This is mumsnet- nobody here could ever eat that without being morbidly obese!

However in reality that's very little food and if she seems tired pale and losing her spark that suggests that it's not good for her health. I'd raise it with her politely from a place of concern making sure not to unintentionally offend her or shame her choices in anyway.

lovem · 31/01/2023 11:25

Look up orthorexia OP and see if that chimes.

EDs are not just about what someone eats, it's how they act and what's motivating them.

lowclouds · 31/01/2023 11:39

How long has she been doing it for?

It's not healthy, but lots of people do have periods of eating like this for a few days and then struggle so they go back to normal.

If it's been more than a week or two on this diet then yes I'd be concerned.

TurtleTriplets · 31/01/2023 11:56

That doesn't seem much food at all but as a kick start on a diet short term isn't the end of the world. Lots of protein in there.

What are her portion sizes? No veg with Dinner? Any protein shakes or similar?

Wishfulthankin · 31/01/2023 20:16

Thanks everyone. I don't know her well, been here 3 months and this is the routine for the past two, weight is falling off her, and although not underweight something isn't right.

I may try and talk to her about it in a non confrontational way. Just need to work out how as I'm obviously not close to her and don't want to over step; but equally if she's not okay I'd like to at least help signpost.
