To wonder how long Sturgeon has left in office

…. And who will be her successor. Surely she can’t survive this, calling the overwhelming majority of the Scottish voting public racist, homophobes and misogynists. Not to mention her support for exposing women prisoners to violent male prisoners who call themselves female

youre being not in reasonable - if I was NS I’d be polishing up the CV

youre unreasonable - be kind (even to a rapist with pink suitcases)

I wouldn't be so sure. I've seen this in Ireland, north and south, where the National Question keeps getting pushed front and centre. It seems that we can tolerate any amount of incompetence and/or corruption in our political class as long as they make the right noises about sovereignty/ national identity. Sturgeon and the SNP are fecking disgraces right enough, but I can't see it harming her electorally. Post 1922, Ireland put the church first, it took over and women and children were its cannon fodder. The Irish people tolerated the excesses and abuses because it was more important to forge a distinct and separate national identity, and I think something similar is happening in Scotland, except the established faith is social justice and progressivism, rather than Catholicism. That's now the case in Ireland too. I've just looked at some revolting pictures of a drag queen with his penis bulge on display, who is standing with some kids to promote St Patricks Day.

1hat's what's coming for Scotland, I daresay. No-one cares, or not enough people do.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 31/01/2023 12:14

Hopefully not long. She’s a dangerous woman and has dragged Scotland down to a level I don’t think we’ve ever been in.

SleeplessInEngland · 31/01/2023 12:16

Think you're being naive. Whatever her failings Scottish voters tend to look at whatever's happening in Westminster decide she'll do.

The real question is: if Scotland ever gets independence, how long will she last.

Tratjymp · 31/01/2023 12:17

People keep voting SNP.

They must think it's the "Scottish" thing to do.

PSNonsense · 31/01/2023 12:20

Fingers crossed she goes soon.

OMG12 · 31/01/2023 12:31

Is there anyone in the SNP who would push the independence question but not slag off the majority of voters

NS and her hsuband have made their fortunes. No need to polich up the CV; they'll have a few leisurely years on the dinner-talks circuit then a wee cottage on a cliff in Fife with a cold wind blowing up her arse.

We won't get independence, it's dead in the water thanks to Nicola. We are eternally grateful to her for sinking that ship deep in the sea.

ilovesooty · 31/01/2023 13:06

I doubt if this post has anything to do with "being kind".

Whammyyammy · 31/01/2023 13:17

Watched her in an interview regarding transgender women, she tied herself up in knotty stumbled and got quire irate.

That's what happens when you just try and say things that you think people want to hear and then fail to put then into practice.

The people of Scotland aren't racist, but I think NS is

IceyDicey · 31/01/2023 13:21

I think we are being very kind to women especially those in prison and those in need of single sex provision.

Neededanewuserhandle · 31/01/2023 13:23

WTF?

youre being not in reasonable
youre unreasonable

Options on the buttons are

You are being unreasonable
You are NOT being unreasonable

Why the need to mangle them?

It always looks unlikely... until the next Westminster catastrofuck. Then the discourse begins all over again. The prospect of Starmer certainly doesn't hurt though.

GasPanic · 31/01/2023 13:48

I think you have to separate out the nationalist issue from the other ones.

A lot of Scots vote SNP because a) they want independence and b) they think they get a better deal that way.

A lot of SNP supporters don't like or agree with the majority of SNP policies, but the independence question trumps these. But the independence question is more about the SNP as a whole, whereas many of the recent policy decisions are about Sturgeon.

Sturgeon is transient. She will either stay a long time or a short time. But ultimately the SNP is not all about Sturgeon. It didn't end when Salmond left and it won't end when Sturgeon goes either.

I think she is on her last legs but the SNP will live on.

This is one of the smartest and most insightful posts I've ever read on MN, and there's a hell of a lot of insightful posts on here so the bar is high.

Yes bang on. I'm an immigrant from a country which has flirted with communism and extreme nationalism in the past 100 years including an actual military coup, and YES you can get people to put up with a lot of incompetence and abuse of power if you can also convince them that extreme natioanlism is the only thing that will help them and all their problems are due to external enemies.

Manorbier · 31/01/2023 13:52

In answer to your question I dunno OP but wearing as we've already Envyhad Sturgeon and Salmond and my mum's maiden name was Roach should I have a go at getting into Scottish politics ? 🤔

Yup well summarised.

No way Sturgeon is going any time soon. SNP hide behind "Westmonster" and independence for everything

MorrisZapp · 31/01/2023 14:09

Salmond and Sturgeon are the juggernaut Scottish politicians of recent decades. It's hard to see anyone remotely near their weight coming up the track. I honestly think that Sturgeon basically is the SNP at this point.
