Preeclampsia

Hi guys Ive recently been watching myself slightly closer for preeclampsia due to eye pain/ headaches and I've started checking my heart rate to. Thing is im useless and don't have a clue what's to high. Would you say 108BPM is pretty average for a resting heart rate?

That. seems high for a resting rate to me. I had pre eclampsia and the headaches were accompanied by flashing lights and dizziness if I moved my head. Hope it's all ok

tilestoclean · 30/01/2023 21:00

No definitely not average. It will depend on age, fitness, health etc but that's high for resting. How are you measuring it?

Crispyturtle · 30/01/2023 21:01

Slightly high for resting but not suggestive of pre-eclampsia in itself.

Couchpotato3 · 30/01/2023 21:02

No-one on here can reassure you. If you're concerned, please go and get checked by a midwife. They would rather see you and reassure you than have you sitting at home not doing anything about possible preeclampsia! Don't take any chances, it isn't worth it.

I'm 23 I'm pretty active in the day as I have a toddler but I pace myself due to being pregnant, at the moment I'm counting my pulse rate for 10 seconds and x6 wondering weather it may be a good idea to pick up a actual little machine for accuracy. I've been checking for the past few days now and it's never below 100bpm

Absolutely do not mess around. Preeclampsia is very dangerous. Call 111 and get proper medical advice from people trained in their jobs, not well meaning strangers on the internet ( like me!)

FannyFifer · 30/01/2023 21:09

If you have signs of preeclampsia then you need to make an appointment to get checked out.
It's high blood pressure that's usually a symptom of PET, however a high pulse can be an indicator of other issues so get advice.

I had preeclampsia last pregnancy and have been told to keep an eye out for symptoms. Noone has mentioned resting heart rate to me, not even the consultants... Blood pressure on the other hand is dropped into every conversation you could ever have about preeclampsia

abbs1 · 30/01/2023 21:17

How many weeks are you op?
I had pre eclampsia and it came out of no where at 38 weeks after being closely monitored in hospital for weeks. Even been in hours before and I was fine.
I had the worst exploding headache, and pain in ribs like someone was punching me and tightening a belt tighter and tighter. My BP reading was 187/96 4+ protein in urine.
If you're unsure in any way call labour ward or your midwife and get checked out.

2nd pregnancy they watched me much closer and ended up inducing me as I had protein in my urine and BP was starting to creep up. Thankfully I didn't have it again but I questioned and requestioned everything.

Your very sightly raised resting heart rate may be more indicative of anaemia. Maybe you need your iron levels checked by midwife. How many weeks are you OP?
A higher than normal heart rate is not indicative of pre-eclampsia you will need bloods and urine checked and blood pressure checked. Other symptoms can be swelling finger ankles/lower limbs and face upper right sided abdominal pain severe headache and or visual disturbances.

Thedogscollar · 30/01/2023 21:29

Forgot to say your blood volume also increases in pregnancy therefore increasing your heartrate. Unless you are feeling unwell your slight increase in heartrate is completely normal.

CoorieInByTheFire · 30/01/2023 21:32

I had pre-eclampsia, resting heart rate was not something I was told to look for either. Headaches, visual disturbances, confusion, puffiness, high blood pressure are the signs I was told to look out for. My first indication was waking up with a face like a football.

DistantSkye · 30/01/2023 21:37

You mention a toddler - did you have pre eclampsia in your first pregnancy? That (or a first pregnancy) are the biggest risk factors. If you think you might have it, phone your midwife promptly, don't mess around ordering home test stuff or taking advice from unqualified people online!

I had pre eclampsia in both my pregnancies - signs I got told to look out for/be checked at MW appts were high blood pressure, protein in urine, swelling (especially hands/face), severe headaches and blurred vision. I can't remember anything about resting heart rate but that doesn't mean you shouldn't seek advice!

lborgia · 30/01/2023 21:41

Hi, you need to get your blood pressure checked. And the protein in your urine. Can you get your BP checked at a pharmacy? Not sure if they will do that.

Remember, you need to compare your BP to YOUR normal.

If it said 125/80, for some people that would be normal, but it's def worth exploring if pre pg out was eg 110/60...

Of course talk about your heart rate, but next step is BP.

Straight away.

Hi I just wanted to assure you that I'm not unqualified to comment on this thread. I have been a midwife for 30 years. I listed the signs and symptoms for pre eclampsia for the OP and advised she see her midwife for further checks.
The OP hadn't come back to the thread so hopefully shd has been checked over and all is OK. I would never dream of advising anybody on medical matters that I have no knowledge of.
I have cared for so many ladies with full blown eclampsia and felt I could at least list the signs/symptoms for others so they can be aware and act promptly.
