To be more than a Lidl appalled?

I'm a regular Lidl shopper, and particularly enjoy sampling the delicacies on offer during their various world food weeks. Interestingly shaped pasta? Of course. Sushi with all the accompanying sauces? Yes please. Wines from around the world? Into the trolley they go.

But this week is American food week, and I just can't.

Caveat: I myself am American. But surely Lidl could have come up with better offerings than marshmallows, peanut butter, pickles, Duff beer, and frozen hot dog pockets? Where is the cobb salad? Pot roast? Jambalaya? Grits? Clam chowder? Apple pie?!

The lack of proper food on offer during their America week is just embarrassing.

Am I wrong in thinking this is only a problem for American food, or are all of Lidl's food weeks filled with the junkiest options from every country and I just don't realise?

Thank you! And yes. The "food" is neither imaginative nor unique.

I take the point from a PP about watered down culture, but I still feel defensive that the best people can come up with for American food is utter shite. At least you can make meals out of the foods available during other country's weeks.

Greek week is pretty much all jars of olives/ peppers etc and cheese: www.lidl.co.uk/c/flavour-of-the-week-greece/c2620 What meal are you making from all that?

American week has some foods you could use for a meal like chicken wings etc: www.lidl.co.uk/c/flavour-of-the-week-usa/c2626

Obviously the food sold are going to be convenience type ready made foods because the raw ingredients are likely already sold.

Fun fact: apple pie originated from England

So what? Many foods people consider national dishes didn't originate from the country they're most famous in. Take croissants for example.

People just love to take a jibe at Americans on MN.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 30/01/2023 21:19

I agree that American week is (for me) the worst week and I rarely buy anything. But Italian week (gorgeous coffee ice cream and rustic passata) and Greek week are brilliant.

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 30/01/2023 21:20

I love those multicoloured farfalle in Italian week.

Wickedgreengirl · 30/01/2023 21:21

America isn’t famed for its nice healthy food though so not sure what you expect them to sell 🥴 I absolutely love it when they sell ensaimadas during Iberian weeks as I’ve never ever seen them outside of Spain and they are my favourite pastries, I also like the olives when it’s Spanish/Greek/Italian week…

As an Italian I would just like to let you know how offended we are by the American's "mac and cheese", "pizza pies" etc.

Stones and glasshouses...

You can't be offended by what a country chooses to do with another country's ingredients and food. It's been happening since time immemorial. People take dishes from one place and adapt them to suit their own tastes. It's produces both masterpieces and travesties. Mac and cheese uses one Italian ingredient, but it's an American dish.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/01/2023 21:23

Grits - cornmeal porridge
Biscuit - like a savoury scone. Well but savoury, but not sweet either.

@TheWomanTheyCallJayne, have you never heard the expression "As American as apple pie"? This is what wiki says about why it's considered American:

The Dutch/Belgian week last summer was awful. Waffles, beer and rubbish croquettes.

I feel your pain.

FaoinDrualus · 30/01/2023 21:29

Just seen we will have Valantines week next week. I think this is the worst, pink chocolate, pink ice-cream, heart shaped pizza, heart shapes pasta, and heart shaped ravioli 🤮

I say we bring back Jolly Good! Thank you for sharing that.

YouSoundLovely · 30/01/2023 21:31

There's a tendency among Germans to perpetuate national stereotypes while considering themselves cosmopolitan (and I get the irony of having just perpetuated a national stereotype myself. I am a naturalised German though and have lived there for yonks, and it's what I observe). Guessing that's what's going on with the 'weeks'.

Rosit · 30/01/2023 21:33

For me, the most disappointing thing is that during the ‘American’ weeks over the past year my Lidl has not had the giant bags of peanut flips

godmum56 · 30/01/2023 21:34

You will prise my giant packet of peanut puffs out of my cold dead hands

Urgh that looks like something a surgeon removed.

What are grits?

One of the most disgusting foodstuff ever.

Don't waste your time or money trying them

SmudgeButt · 30/01/2023 21:37

I just thank dog that they never do a Canadian promo. Nanaimo bars? Saskatoon berries? Tourtiere? Oh and microwavable poutine!!! And never, ever do a Lidl version of Timbits!!! Try that and I'll be on the first Air Canada flight out of here!!!

Of course it's nice when they do the yankees stuff that the maple syrup is out - all from Quebec of course and cheaper than any other shop in town, and cheaper than buying in Canada!!!

SurelyTheyCanDoALidlBetter · 30/01/2023 21:46

Definitely agree on maple syrup.

I was with you until you mentioned apple pie. The British have been making apple pies for hundreds of years; long before the USA was a nation. Other European countries have their own versions too.

Lalliella · 30/01/2023 21:46

Have they got shit chocolate?

This has been addressed a few times in the thread. 🇺🇲

TheHauntedPencilCase · 30/01/2023 21:51

I've scanned the post so sorry if I've missed but could someone share a biscuit recipe for me to try? Cheesy would be even better!

Skyrimisveryrelaxing · 30/01/2023 21:54

It’s Greek week in mine and that’s my fave.

I like the frozen cheese puffs and the kalamata olives in the can I stock up on the olives
