New Job. AIBU to worry they've changed their minds?

Interviewed for a job last Tuesday. Was informed later that day I had the job and would receive an email in the following couple of days outlining next steps (training dates, contract confirmation, etc). The email still hasn't arrived. I check my spam folder daily. I've double checked my deleted emails in case it got caught in a mass delete and nothing. I have no contact number as they contacted me from a private number to let me know I had the job.
I'm starting to worry that they've changed their minds about employing me.
Part of me knows it's likely it's just taking time for the email to come through and it could be as simple as nailing down the start date for training and they don't want to send an email without a start date.
However, I've had so many knockbacks in the past that my confidence is shot to pieces and it's hard to stop thinking that they've just changed their minds about employing me.
I'm being unreasonable, aren't I?

There must be an email address or telephone number for the company you could try?

Notimefor · 30/01/2023 19:26

Call them?

EpicGem · 30/01/2023 19:35

Notimefor · 30/01/2023 19:26

Call them?

There's no phone number to call them on. They've only ever phoned from a private number.
The only email address I have is a generic no-reply one. When I log onto the candidate portal, it hasn't updated since the start of the month, yet I had to log into it to book the interview. The only thing I can do in the portal, aside from apply for other jobs with them, is withdraw my application.

Sorry OP but I wouldn’t want to work for a company that has no online presence or contact details. Sounds dodgy. Anything on Facebook or companies house?

itswednesdayy · 30/01/2023 19:40

No job is official until you have a contract with formal offer, so keep applying

itswednesdayy · 30/01/2023 19:41

Also I feel there IS a way you can hunt down contact details. What if they have the wrong email for or something?

StrawberryAnnie · 30/01/2023 19:42

Have you googled the company? I’d also be suspicious if they don’t have an online presence.

They're a fairly big company. Just seems to be contacting them as an applicant is difficult. You apply via the website and then a no-reply email confirms, informs you of selection for interview, confirms date and time of interview. They phone you the day before the interview from a private number to ensure you have all documents required and then again from a private number to let you know the outcome of the interview.
I used to think getting hold of someone in the NHS was a pain when I worked there, this is beyond that.

The business must have a contact number somewhere even if it's Head Office in Birmingham/London/Leeds....if not they'll definitely be an email address. Just mark FAO HR. I'm assuming you found the job online and logged into the portal to apply. Are you confident it's a legitimate business? If so try to call or fire off an email.
Next time/if someone calls again ask how/who to contact of you need to speak with someone. If you've given references check with your referee if they're been approached.
It's only been 3 working days. No email tomorrow and I think it's fine to chase up.

They haven't had my references yet. I have to fill out a form for a period I was self employed, give them a reference who can confirm that I was on UC before my self employment period, a reference to confirm my self employment period, and another one to confirm that I went back onto UC until this job. However, that goes to a separate company who do a full 5 year back ground check and they need any non employment gaps covered to say that, yes I can fully work in this sector. They email me for those details once I have a start date for the training as, in theory, by the time training is done, their checks will be completed and I'll be good to go on my start date.

If you were self employed, are they using your accountant (if you had one) to confirm self employment and benefits?

I wish I earned enough when self employed to have an accountant! It went so badly that I didn't even earn enough (before expenses) to need to inform HMRC. Not that I didn't try and let HMRC know. They just said to call them back when I hit the threshold for self employed earnings. I did say they could try and contact the company that I was self employed via (cleaning company who only take people on a self employed basis) however, they should be prepared for their email to go into said company's spam folder and never be seen.
They may be contacting (or trying to) the DWP to confirm me being on UC and the dates, however, if they do go that route, I can see my start date ending up being next year.

Do you have the names of the people who interviewed you? Ring and ask for their direct line or their email address?

Or see if their contact email is on LinkedIn?

Ring the mainline ask for HR?

Contact on twitter and ask for a HR number or email address by DM if you think nits more appropriate?

Google their HR department

Google to the vacancies/careers section of their website

If none of those work, youwould have to have concerns about the company

PaniniHead · 30/01/2023 20:08

I can 100% be certain that the DWP will not confirm the dates you were on UC. This is confirmed either via tax records you provide (P60s) or using your UC statements. Confirmation of benefits were a thing for JSA but not for UC. In fact, it’s a misconduct offence if a member of staff discloses it to a third party for a work reference

PaniniHead · 30/01/2023 20:13

I agree, sounds so dodgy

This is true. I work for DWP; they will tell you to show the employer your UC statements. They don’t issue any letters beyond what you can access in your account, so they won’t confirm the dates you claimed benefits for nor will they discuss your claim with 3rd parties. UC does not provide references for employers or liaise with your employer as part of pre employment checks.

So that goes back to the post where I said I was told that, as part of my 5 year background check, I needed to provide details of references who could confirm that I had been and currently am claiming UC. The company themselves have not requested references as the 5 year background check is seen as sufficient.

They aren't a dodgy company, it's just likely that I haven't looked in the right place on the candidate portal to find the required contact info (I'm good at that as I'm too scared of clicking the wrong thing and accidentally withdrawing an application). I'll have a look tomorrow to see if I can find anything relating to contacting even vaguely the right area of the company.

Get their general number, call them and ask to talk to HR, explain situ and see what they say

EpicGem · 31/01/2023 11:32

I've had a look through all correspondence from the company and double-checked the jobs section of their website and candidate portal. No phone number to be found. Only phone number on the website is for customers and I'd feel wrong calling that number and taking up time of someone who would either need to try and transfer me to the right department (and that's not always possible) or find the number I need to call and that takes away from a customer with a genuine query.
However, I think I've found an email address that isn't a no-reply and for the area I'd be working in, so will drop an email asking about who I need to contact. Will update when/if I get a reply.

UPDATE:

Received a response to my email today. I haven't received a confirmation email yet as they are still waiting for confirmation of dates for training. Once they have that, they'll send everything over.

So I was stressing and panicking for nothing. Now I can go find something new to stress over.

That’s news OP!

By the way, it’s ok to pick up the phone to a company and asked to be transferred to another department.

The person who picks up the phone may not be able to help you, but it won’t ruin their day.

They are at their work, it’s not as though you are calling someone’s personal mobile number during their time off.

StrawberryAnnie · 01/02/2023 20:11
