To be annoyed after school care cancelled on a strike day?

My child's class is not striking - but my childcare provider has just said she can't run her after school club as not many children will be going on a strike day so it's not financially viable.
She hasn't offered my money back for the day she's closing.
I'm just really annoyed that firstly she has given literally no notice, and also I work - that's why I have childcare in the first place!!
am I being unreasonable to expect the afterschool childcare to still run despite some classes striking?
Her own children are at the child care so it's not like she has other commitments.

That’s really frustrating. Perhaps her children are off and she’s planning a day out. I would think other parents would have to pay her fee if they have a regular booking, even if school is closed, so I don’t buy her excuse.

YANBU, but what did she say when you asked about the refund?

TeenDivided · 30/01/2023 18:24

So if she is open but not many attend it isn't financially viable, but if she closes she keeps your money? That doesn't sound right, surely?

Coffeellama · 30/01/2023 18:25

Also her excuse makes no sense, if it’s not financially viable to open cos several kids won’t be attending… she’s clearly not charging people who don’t use the childcare… I.e you. So if you haven’t already called her out on it you need too.

Lapland123 · 30/01/2023 18:25

If it’s ‘financially viable’ you need your money back obviously!!!

AFineBalance · 30/01/2023 18:26

How is in not financially viable if she has kept your (and presumably other people’s) money?

WeWereInParis · 30/01/2023 18:28

Sounds like she's off out for the day with her kids. If she's not refunding people, it can't be not financially viable.

SeasonFinale · 30/01/2023 18:28

It is financially viable if she is keeping all the money of all the people who would be there. Email and say I assume you will refund x date to me or will it show as a credit for my next bill?

MrsCarson · 30/01/2023 18:52

She's angling for a paid day off then?

MarshaBradyo · 30/01/2023 18:53

Well I’d get a refund for a start

Exactly this. Surely the contract says if she is cancelling you get the money back?

museumum · 30/01/2023 18:55

If ours closes we get our money back. So it stayed open this time, even though school was shut. Not sure childcare 3:25-5:45 only is any use to anybody.

Conkersinautumn · 30/01/2023 19:04

If it is not financially viable then she should be refunding or others have insisted they're not paying.

Invisimamma · 30/01/2023 19:08

I'm in Scotland where teachers have been striking for a while now. On stroke day our out of school club is closed as it's run from a school building but we're still charged for strike days, I'm so cross about it. Reasons they give is that they still need to pay staff and they will do online training. But I think if they are not offering a service then they shouldn't charge.
