Constipation after not eating or drinking much due to bereavement what can I do?

I really don't need this on top of everything. I have so much travelling to do in next few days around stuff to do with my mum's death and I now feel so unwell and heavy in my abdomen with this. Think it's to do with a few days dehydration and not eating much at all.

I'm drinking loads of water but need a quick fix before long hours of driving. I've never had an issue like this before but remember reading fibre isn't good sometimes but cant remember why? So not to buy Fybogel which is the only thing I know in this category as my mate from uni used to get it?

What is senna from those ads, would that be better? I just need to get rid of this one fixable problem I have zero capacity for this right now am massively overwhelmed.

Another vote for lactulose. I was hospitalised with a serious intestinal blockage and that stuff worked wonders. It's not an instant cure, but it's bloody effective when it kicks in - Fybogel etc did bugger all for me.

Tinned mandarins might help if you want to avoid OTC stuff. So sorry for your loss x

Don't do all of these suggestions at once!
Sorry for your loss, that's a tough one to bear. Totally understand that feeling of being at the end of your rope for dealing with anything else. One day at a time.

Laxido is really good

Vegetablesupreme · 30/01/2023 12:17

Be careful with some laxatives. For me, the only one that doesn't keep me on the toilet all night is lactolose. It's a stool softener I believe and can take several doses to work. Having said that, when I was in hospital last year and became constipated, they gave me a sachet of laxido each morning with breakfast and in 2 - 3 days I could go without a problem.
I'm so sorry about your dm. Hugs to you x

Ok maybe tmi but seems I was panicking prematurely as the coffee, water and kefir did work with more time, and the issue is now resolved thankfully.

Thank you for all ideas, that was such an awful uncomfortable feeling and was starting to panic.

I was about to write something but see it’s resolved itself. Happy for you it’s worked out. Sorry for your loss

I'm sorry for your loss OP. I suffer with this around my monthly cycle sometimes and I always keep a box of Laxido sachets handy. I mix one with a glass of water in the evenings for a few days and it just stops everything from getting too backed up. I'm glad your issue seems to have resolved but if you feel like your eating or drinking habits might be effected for a bit longer then I can recommend the Laxido. It's a softener, not a stimulant so shouldn't cause any cramping or toilet emergencies.

I have used glycerin suppositories a couple of times when things really got stuck. They work absolute wonders, and if you know what I mean, they deal with the hard stuff near the end that's blocking you up, rather than softening what's going in now. You put one in, wait half an hour, then you will naturally need to go (hint: make sure you also buy latex gloves to put them in...) It's gentle, the poo doesn't come rushing out, and also there are no knock-on effects.

I find a small glass of coconut water works well, and usually within 30 minutes. And my mum is sold on it too. But very glad that you are sorted now.
