They said on the phone that I can't even take him to the out of hours as they don't see anyone under 2. “

Where are you? Out of hours will see anyone, from newborn here (NW England coast)

Since Xmas both DH and I have had urine infections and both of us had a telephone appointment. We both had to drop a sample in to the surgery the following day and were prescribed antibiotics. Job done. Didn't really feel the need to see a GP.

However, having recently had my elderly mother in hospital with a broken hip, I would worry if my family had anything serious enough as to have to go to hospital. The state of our hospitals is truly awful.

Well at our surgery I had to speak to the Doctor first before being allowed to drop off the sample. In the meantime I had to keep my DC home from school because they're not allowed to use the toilets during lessons. So the system may well have worked for you but it doesn't for everyone. In the meantime I had to keep my child at home at a crucial time in their education. Oh and just to add to that I needed to visit several pharmacies in order to get the antibiotics too.

I think the speed in which you can get a GP appointment is very much based on where you are and the capacity of the surgery. My Village surgery has 4000 patients total. The slightly bigger surgery up the road has 29000 - my husband was a patient there previously and says getting an appointment was near impossible. I can usually get an appt same day if they deem an appt necessary.

There's a cip that went viral recently of Tony Blair being grilled on question time because people were angry they had to accept some GP appointments that same day and couldn't choose to have them a few days later.

How times have changed.

I called at 11:57am last week, I got through straight away and got an appointment for the 14th.

I should add that it's a non-urgent appointment and it's to see a nurse and not my actual doctor.
