To irrationally resent SUVs ?

For those who have impossibly avoided the term, I’m talking about “fake 4x4s.”

A car that would have been a hatchback a dozen years ago, but is now wider, higher up, with fake 4x4 styling (flared wheel arches, roof rails, big plastic moulding).

I can’t stand them.

As someone who has owned two generations of Range Rovers when we lived off a track a mile or so from the main road, I realise people are free to lob back at me. but those cars had a purpose. We wanted to be comfortable; but we absolutely needed the traction and clearance that vehicle gave us.

Does anyone need what a Grandland X offers? A Mokka? (Jesus save me from that awful car. Worst on sale today - just buy a Corsa and stop being previous). Who needs a Sportage or a Qashqai? (the hallmarks of the aspiring, when years ago a Focus or a Golf would have done just fine).

The worst offenders for me are actually the so called luxury ones. BMW X5 is an abomination - can’t do anything off road, is massively wide on road, and two mums at our school park terribly with them and block the road for the other direction.

And that’s the thing - a large segment of folk who own them, can’t drive them properly. I go to the hospital car park twice weekly with my DD. If someone is careless (often are) and parks close to or on the white line… renders the next space completely useless. Which when hunting for the one or two spaces available for my vulnerable DD, can be infuriating.

We don’t need these things, but I get people love them for

• being “high up” (still doesn’t make the drivers any better at driving)

• Being “high up” to load DCs and allow elderly parents to get in and out without bending back

• some of them have a big boot

Ok, but my answer to all these three is..

an MPV. Cars like the Ford Galaxy, S Max, Touran, Alhambra - all high up seating, easy to get in and out of, massive boots.

But no.. the truth is fashion. Why buy a Corsa when you have a jacked up version. Why buy a 5 series when you can have an X5 and dominate the school run.

Meanwhile the greater fuel consumption, the materials cost to make the thing …

AIBU to irrationally hate these stupid wide massive things?

i can drive my car. It’s a tool for a purpose. I don’t fear reversing, or three pointers, or anything else.

What I’m saying (which is being wilfully ignored) is that years ago, folk who drove badly could still just about get past in their 1650-1700mm wide hatchbacks.

Now that everything is a bloody SUV with 1800-1900mm width and flared arches and loads of other stuff which helps no one, then it exacerbated a problem that now leads to Mexican standoffs on side roads etc where the person should reverse due to a passing space behind them, but they won’t. And their silly car choice makes it ten times worse.

so no this isn’t about me owning X and others owning Y and it’s “not fair”.

It’s about a compounded problem of SUVs being the most popular class of car, yet driven so often by absolute weirdos who will never ever reverse and who hug the centre line with their right wheel, no matter the road surface.

"and who hug the centre line with their right wheel, no matter the road surface"

I have this problem much more often with cars like Corsa (or white vans, but I think they just don't care) 🤐

Catspyjamas17 · 30/01/2023 14:48

Plus when I lived in London I used public transport, I didn't need a fucking car at all most of the time, and certainly not a £90,000 electric wankermobile.

In most of the country you are far more justified in owning a car, any car, full stop than the OP as public transport is non-existent, expensive and unreliable or if you are particularly lucky, all three.

SaySomethingMan · 30/01/2023 14:49

Range Rovers are up there, when it comes to ugly cars. DH wanted one last year. Glad he saw sense and changed his mind.

Orangebadger · 30/01/2023 14:49

I totally agree with you. I live in London and really see no need for them at all. My OH would love one, but I am pretty steadfast against them, especially as you say they are modelled like a 4 x 4 for which in London you have no need anyway, but most of them don't have that function. We have an estate car with a larger boot space than the equivalent SUV and guzzles a lot less petrol!

Kualma · 30/01/2023 14:49

What are you hoping to achieve by this post? I love my SUV and I don’t have to give reasons why I do

Stellaris22 · 30/01/2023 14:50

chupachump if you need a roof box surely you can't fit everything you need in your car

We fit huge canvas tents and loads of other things regularly and have never needed a roof box.

We laughed at most boot space in SUVs when we looked as they're tiny.

chupachump · 30/01/2023 14:50

Oakbeam · 30/01/2023 14:45

But I just can’t stand the silly aggressive styling and the pointlessly wide stance

?

Nissan Qashqai width: 1,835 mm

Porsche Taycan width: 1,967 mm

Fucking lol. 😄

Pollymollydolly · 30/01/2023 14:51

You can hate whatever you like. I can drive whatever I like.

For a holiday. Because the dogs live in the boot and I don't expect them to share with the tent and camping chairs.

Thanks for the nitpicking though. I know what can fit it my car and it's a lot more than when I had a hatchback.

chupachump · 30/01/2023 14:53

@SavoirFlair's car is also much wider than my SUV. 😂

Oakbeam · 30/01/2023 14:53

I love my SUV and I don’t have to give reasons why I do

That’s not the point. The OP has an irrational hatred of cars that are shorter, narrower, and nearly half the weight of her own.

MaryShelley1818 · 30/01/2023 14:55

I love my SUV, it fits my needs and I don't have to justify why.
I will say though, if I'm spending £12,000 on a car (second hand) I'm going to buy one I actually want. I couldn't give a monkeys about style, trends, fashion or what other people think.
I'm also quite capable of driving it and parking it which I do daily.

MathiasBroucek · 30/01/2023 14:57

YANBU. An SUV will almost always be slower, heavier, less aerodynamic, thirstier and less good at handling than the equivalent hatchback, saloon or estate. Some people find the extra ground clearance or higher seating position preferable so I don’t judge individuals for having them but in general it’s a (negative) fashion thing.

The car biz is good at this nonsense. For a time, the fashion was for hard suspension and low profile tyres on upmarket models. Great on a circuit but just uncomfortable on most UK roads….

rumship · 30/01/2023 14:57

Here a thought for you OP, perhaps people buy cars crossovers for a number of reasons. Here is a few for you to gawp at and moan from your shitty unreliable Range Rover.

They like the style.
They have certain features they like, surround cameras, safety features, looks, technology not available in other cars they are after in a similar price range.
They spot a crossover for a bargain price and snap it up.
They like a car with reliability and good warranty (Unlike Range rovers 😂).
They have an engine type they want, Hybrid ect.
They come in a colour they actually want and might even have a nice panoramic roof.

This list is endless, and FYI before you reply to me I drive an estate hybrid and live in the country too and guess what the climate in the UK is now very mild so the odd occasion and when it gets bad I snow socks etc, very simple. Oh and lastly I can easily afford a Range Rover but I know there unreliable ugly things usually driven by wankers who think they own the road😂

Slowingdownagain · 30/01/2023 09:30

They are loads safr for the driver/ passengers too I would think. Strudy builds so if you did have an accident (espeically with a bigger vehicle) you'd be much better off than in a fiat 500. We've all seen the big pile ups on the motorway and we know which cars crimple like paper and which don't.

For me, my SUV (it's not a 4x4 and is chargeable hybrid) is about safety most of all, I find it easier to drive as I am up higher, and it's convenient for space the kids, dogs, etc. My FIL with a bad knee finds it much easier to get in and out of than a lower car too, so that's a bonus. I am not a good parker (and never was - even with my little clio), but the huge armery of cameras and my "parking assistant" software makes me able to park perfectly in one go almost every time. Vs about 300 moves when I had a small car that only had mirrors to guide me.

I think your views on SUV are pretty outdated.

But this means in your tank...

What happens to the people in the small car when they are hit by one of these huge cars....
Therefore more people buy them who wouldn't ordinarily...

Its rather like guns in USA....

Oakbeam · 30/01/2023 15:00

@rumship

Keep up! The OP doesn’t drive a Range Rover.

HikingforScenery · 30/01/2023 15:00

All i’m getting from this’ post is how glad I am that everyone is free to
choose whatever car they like, can afford and suits their conscience.

Hellsmovie · 30/01/2023 15:01

Picklypickles · 30/01/2023 09:35

How on earth did you manage to blag a Driving License if you can't park a Clio in less than 300 moves?

Agreed. You not a good driver if you cant park a clio

Stellaris22 · 30/01/2023 15:02

Give it time and people will be justifying owning vehicles like this! I'm only half joking) www.rezvanimotors.com/tank-military-edition

rumship · 30/01/2023 15:02

@Oakbeam How about comment on my actual content, or does you sad little comment make you feel superior 😂

Hellsmovie · 30/01/2023 15:05

Also a Porsche Taycanid is a hideous looking car

FunkyMonks · 30/01/2023 15:06

I agree with you Op I bloody hate them and it's always the same type of people that drive them can't drive seem to think they can park where ever they like.
And personally unless you live on a farm or miles in the sticks somewhere I really can see the point in them for just back and for to work the shop school drop offs etc they are far too big for every day use.

DogsDryWineAndCheese · 30/01/2023 15:07

Hahaha!!! Your whole previous post was dripping in your perceived superiority and dick swinging (glad you can ‘easily afford’ a Range Rover!).

OP has a Porsche Taycan….. Tell me you haven’t read the thread without telling me you haven’t read the thread.

Slowingdownagain · 30/01/2023 15:07

Hellsmovie · 30/01/2023 15:01

Agreed. You not a good driver if you cant park a clio

Oh ffs. I can bloody park! And I passed my drivers test just fine. I just find it loads easier to park my current (SUV) car. Of course I wasn't, literally, using 300 moves to park my clio 🙄
