To go to India

Ineedanoatlatte · 29/01/2023 20:44

I’m 31, single, no kids. I have a few grand of credit card debt as it is & I’m on the verge of booking a 20 day trip to India which’ll cost about £2k (credit card). I am just getting by at the moment so financially this is not a good idea but on the other hand I’ve always always wanted to go to India and I am right now in a mood of fuck it, you only live once and can’t be frugal always!

No. That would be silly. Pay your debt first, then save up.

EzzieM · 29/01/2023 20:47

🤣 It would be remarkably stupid

SavoirFlair · 29/01/2023 20:47

YOLO, people! YO-fucking-LO.

🙄

OneCup · 29/01/2023 20:49

I absolutely wouldn't. Wouldn't enjoy the holiday knowing I'm in debt.

EveSix · 29/01/2023 20:50

I just voted YABU as you don't have the resources to fund this expense. I turned it over in my mind, substituting 'going to India' with some other 'you-only-live-once-experiences' in the same price bracket. I've spent a lot of time in India and love it. I've also been poor. I love not being 'just scraping by' more than I love having been to India, so it's a U from me.

VioletCharlotte · 29/01/2023 20:51

Yes, if you're not in debt with essential bills, rent, etc and have a stable job then go for it. Covid taught me that you never know what's round the corner and just do things when you have the opportunity.

cushioncovers · 29/01/2023 20:51

Nope. Grow up and pay your debts off first.

PacificallyRequested · 29/01/2023 20:52

A 20 day tour India for only £2k is going to be roughing it. It's a cheap country but not that cheap if you want a good standard of accommodation. I presume that's not including flights either.

Pay off the debt, save up and go on a better quality trip.

mrsbyers · 29/01/2023 20:54

I’ve always had a rule to not have a holiday unless I have paid for it and spending money set aside before going - I hate the thought is coming back from a trip to debt , would rather save up

Choconut · 29/01/2023 20:55

Where does it end though? If you are only just getting by at the moment then there is no way to pay this off and the interest is going to mean it keeps going up and up. What about next time you want a holiday what will you do then? I can see you just getting more and more and more in debt with no way to ever pay it off.

I would find a way to get your costs down or your pay up so you can pay off the cards and then save for a holiday.

TrappedOverseas · 29/01/2023 20:56

I absolutely would go! But maybe whilst you’re away have a think about how to improve your financially situation when you return.

Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2023 20:57

2k debt in the scheme of it is not a lot. You don’t have children or a partner so contact an agency tomorrow to start shifts round your current job and or at weekends (when pay is often higher) and in a few months fine you will be debt free. In a few more you will have the money to go to India without being in debt.

i have been, I loved it and it is amazing but it is foolish to get into further debt when at the moment you could get this paid off pretty quickly.

I work 3 jobs with 2 kids to pay my way and not be in debt. You can do it too

On top of all anything may happen when you are on a long trip that far, you may need cash and won't be able to use your credit card at ATMs, various emergencies, missed flights etc etc. I would think it is a bit reckless and unsafe.

roarfeckingroarr · 29/01/2023 20:58

I went to India on my own at 31 (3 years ago). I took a one way flight to Mumbai and then made my way around on the railway, staying in guest houses / hostels booked night by night for pennies. That's how I would recommend doing it, rather than wasting £2k for just 20 days. I spent less than that including the flight in 4 months or so.

Ineedanoatlatte · 29/01/2023 20:59

I do own my own flat though & think it has probably gone up quite a bit in value, so my thinking is when I sell in a couple of years I can use some of the profit I will hopefully have made paying off CC debt.

Why would you want to increase your debt?

Repent at leisure.

peaceandpotato · 29/01/2023 21:01

You can't afford it. You do not have the money. Once you have the money then sure.

Mummieslncorporated · 29/01/2023 21:01

"2k debt in the scheme of it is not a lot"

It's not just 2k in debt though. It's 2k on top of the 'few grand of debt' that op already has.

They say they are just getting by at the moment as it is.

It's a really bad idea, in these circumstances.

earsup · 29/01/2023 21:07

you could go for less, we did a cheap package to Goa [about 700 each ] and then travelled around, flights and trains are cheap... and spent less than 2k on a 2 week trip, Mumbai not cheap tho...other places are....save up a bit and then go !...

I'd love to do that. One day!

Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2023 21:20

@Mummieslncorporated i meant that as she has £2k debt she shouldn’t get more. But that compared to£10k, £2k is more achievable to pay off at a faster rate. She should pay it off before spending any more money on things that aren’t essential.

as someone with no children or partner to have to dedicate time/finances to I really agree with you that she needs to clear the debt as a priority and then save for the trip.

tara66 · 29/01/2023 21:24

If you think you won't be affected by vast hordes of poverty stricken people every where - some clawing at your taxi when stuck in traffic jam - go. I went to Mumbai - not alone, but was to scared to go out of the hotel. The trip from airport and back by taxis were experiences I shall never forget. I had been to African countries and not been scared at all.

Cherryblossoms85 · 29/01/2023 21:26

Sure but go for longer.

DoorsClosing · 29/01/2023 21:40

If you've got no mortgage and you are a few thousand in debt it shouldn't take that long to pay it off, then you can go and have a much better time. I've always wanted to go to India.
