Baby 3 months old and screams all day still

Since birth my baby has screamed inconsolably all day long. At first after being prescribed nutramigem forumla we had a week of ‘regular baby crying’, now back to screaming constantly. I can’t put him down, can’t hold him, can’t feed him, can’t swaddle him, can’t take him outside without very high pitched screams. I also tried gaviscon but no difference. Doesn’t calm in the car either.
The only positive is at night he sleeps well, is now interested in playing on his mat and has started smiling. Although he very rarely smiles at me ever.

I am on edge everyday I feel like I could have a breakdown at any minute. Did anyone else experience extreme screams like this from their baby? It is eardrum shattering every day. And did it get better?

Earplugs

Oh OP - that sounds really hard.

My baby didn’t scream but the ones that I know that she has silent reflux and all were diagnosed at A&E after days of crying. It’s so unfair.

They needed better meds than gaviscon.

I would speak to your dr. In my experience it’s not normal for babies to cry all day like that.

I’m sorry it’s so hard right now.

*ones that DID had silent reflux

LemonSwan · 29/01/2023 12:59

We had this whilst on the Gaviscon. Are you still on it? If so try taking off.

WhiteFire · 29/01/2023 13:00

I used to joke that my ds would cry if his feet pointed the wrong way.

It sounds difficult for both of you, but I agree with a pp that you need to go back to the GP as this sounds like pain.

Mine didn’t get on with the first stage milks. They started well for a week then got worse again. We had to have the puramino one In the end. Worth going back to GP to ask for this is neocate (I think it’s called) to try.

Yes she had allergies. I had to hound the doctors (wouldn't listen to my concerns it might be allergy). She screamed for hours. All you can do is go to the doctors?
I feel for you.

And 3 months old is old enough to trial no reflux strategies. We did it with our boy and it worked out well.

But if you do need a thickener then try carobel instead of the Gaviscon. And get some probiotic drops to restore the gut balance with good bacteria.

I really feel for you. DS2 was like this. Prescribed Nutramigen which worked for a week. But then the HV advised to go for a completely dairy free formula - Neocate. It did the trick. Along with Gaviscon, if I remember correctly.

He had no rashes or dodgy nappies. It was just screaming apart from at night, like you.
Feeding time was very stressful.

Hope you have good support around you Smile

Piggysmalls22 · 29/01/2023 13:56

Thankyou so much everyone for your advice. I’m going to get back onto my GP tomorrow. I’m praying Neocate and something else other than Gaviscon is the answer 🤞

My second child did this. Had a missed dairy allergy until 6-7 weeks. Cutting dairy helped, as did cutting caffeine. For the rest of the screaming, it settled down at 12-13 weeks quite suddenly. Hang in there!!

My daughter was the same - the screaming was just so fucking relentless. She was eventually prescribed omeprazole for silent reflux, which definitely helped but wasn’t miraculous. I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but time was what helped. She was very different once she could sit up at 5 months, and was much better by 10 months. She’s now 5.5yrs and is delightful (though an only child…!), and I’m convinced she got out all her grump in her first year, as she was a relatively easy toddler, too. Anecdotal, of course!

oh, on the plus side, as she screamed constantly, it was very easy to sleep train her (via controlled crying) at 6/7 months. It was like water off a ducks back to us, as she screamed anyway, so why not teach her to sleep at the same time? She was sleeping through the night within 3 days. Friends whose babies barely whimpered day to day could not cope with even one minute of crying - amateurs! (Tongue in cheek, but the sentiment remains).

Awww poor baby, my DS was like that too..... it was so stressful, doctor friends diagonised it was trapped wind, but my GP kept telling me it was normal, finally GP prescribed baby gaviscon.... it was a game changer. DH and I also did a lot of massaging of DS's tummy, bicycle movements etc, and lay him on him belly which he loved.... my advise is go back to GP and ask for a thorough check, maybe even a scan. Sending you hugs as I know how tough it can be. xx
