To be shocked by all the financial abuse stories

Read quite a few threads recently about some kind of financial abuse where women's partners hold all the purse strings, have the house in their name etc while the women have taken pay cuts as sahms, never got married, done poorly paid work for family businesses, no pension. Then there's the other stories of cocklodgers or men taking the piss and expecting to be kept!!

I'm so shocked by these stories and can't understand how people can get to that point of being so financially vulnerable while these b*stards hold all the cards and take advantage.

I wish there was more financial education out there, particularly for women, on how to avoid this and maintain some level of financial independence/ security to protect themselves from these money obsessed arseholes - there seem to be a lot of then around.

I don’t see why the education should be focused on women - like many forms of abuse, women are often the perpetrators too.
A good friend of mine was absolutely done over by his (now ex) wife, she rinsed him in their relationship then once again during the divorce.

I’m all for awareness, but the education side needs to make it clear that BOTH men and women can be victims.

I get that everyone should be educated. I suppose I was thinking about things like career breaks and being a sahm which could leave women vulnerable but it can work both ways too.

Even just drilling it into daughters/ sons to never depend on anyone financially

It's thanks to mn horror stories that I'd never have a joint account.
