To ask if you've ever had dry socket after a tooth removal?

I had my top wisdom tooth removed yesterday. It was fine! Out within a few seconds it felt like, no issues. I was in and out within 5 minutes I think

The local anaesthetic wore off over a few hours and I was just a bit tender

This afternoon I feel like I want to rip my face off. The pain is so intense I'd rather push another baby out. What the hell is this?

I've googled dry socket but my dental surgeon said it's almost impossible I'd get that since it was a top wisdom tooth and came out really easily, intact in one piece

She said any problems though and to go back to my own dentist. What do I do? Can a GP not help? I really can't afford the cost of a dentist trip Sad they charge for a consultation and I don't have that

Is there any self help measures? What helped you?

Thanks so much

For tonight rinse your mouth with salt dissolved in water. Use a warm solution and repeat every hour or so. Take some OTC painkillers. As the pain is really bad take a couple of cocodamol as long as you’re not planning on driving or have to look after children alone. Or take 2 paracetamol with an Ibuprofen. You can repeat every 4 hours to a maximum of 8 tablets in 24 hours. See how you feel in the morning.

KateStev · 27/01/2023 19:52

I recently had this in a top wisdom tooth. You only need antibiotics if it’s infected (mine wasn’t).

The dentist packed it and the pain went away very quickly. Had this done a couple of times and then thankfully it got better. A couple of weeks later the gum had grown over.

SunUpSunDown · 27/01/2023 19:52

Yes...it was awful. Even cool temperatures triggered the horrendous pain. I was told it couldn't be, as I'd had the cavity sutured...but it absolutely was. I was maxing out on the strongest OTC co-codamol plus aspirin, and I barely got any pain relief from it.

FontSnob · 27/01/2023 19:53

Yes, its fucking horrendous. I think you may be able to call 111 to see an our of hours dentist and they will pack it for you with stinky stuff. Don’t wait. Hope you get it sorted asap.

As per previous message
a do not use Clove oil , ever , in the mouth , there are some great pictures of clove oil burns here ihrjournal.com/ihrj/article/view/222/778 and I have had to take a tooth out on someone who burnt all the way through the gum to bone with clove oil

b do not take antibiotics that have not been prescribed . Dry socket is NOT an infection , it's where the clot has not formed or has been disturbed. Cleaning and dressing the socket is the cure. Antibiotic resistance is a holocaust which is coming very soon if we do not curb unnecessary and excessive use of antibiotics . People will start to die from infections from cuts again. All healthcare professionals have training to become antibiotic guardians because these precious medicines are becoming ineffective because of inappropriate use.

c it may not be dry socket , it may be an infected socket or an entirely different problem. If you can get a NHS dentist to see you then it will cost a band one charge in England or Wales (£14 to £24 ish ) or around £14 ish NI and Scotland to see you. If you do not have a dentist ring NHS for your nearest emergency provision which may be some time/distance away.

I had a top wisdom tooth removed and they gave antibiotics (no infection) and advised salt water gargling after 24 hours only. This was private £500 😳

U2HasTheEdge · 27/01/2023 19:59

Yeah, they couldn't pack it, as I also had lock-jaw and couldn't open my mouth wide enough.

That was an utterly miserable time.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 27/01/2023 20:04

I get it every time I have a tooth removed. I have to go back to the dentist after a couple of days for it to be re-packed. Super strong painkillers too. Usually lasts around 7-10 days for me. It's utterly shit.

FitAt50 · 27/01/2023 20:30

I had it 15 years and it's the worst pain I have ever experienced.

SheilaWilcox · 27/01/2023 20:37

I've had it and def worse than childbirth. Couldn't sleep.
Didn't need antibiotics but did go back to the dentist 3 times. On the last time, saw a different partner and he pulled a massive root out. There were little splinters of bone coming out for weeks.
Keep going back to dentist until they sort it for you.

Northstar1234 · 27/01/2023 20:49

Dry socket was the worst pain i’ve ever had and i’ve birthed a fair few children. I saw dentist and they referred to Gp for some super strong painkillers and antibiotics. Call 111. I am so sorry this is happening to you. Hope you feel better soon.

iolaus · 27/01/2023 21:18

It was dry socket on bottom 2nd molar rather than a wisdom tooth

The only thing that relieved it until I got to see them and they packed it was sipping water (it covered the bone with fluid) - I gave myself water poisioning through drinking so much water, then ended up vomiting and so on, turned into ludwig's angina and cellulitis needing surgery

When I then needed an extraction on the same tooth on the opposite side I was terrified - but she put a stitch in and no problem at all

U1sce · 27/01/2023 21:22

Both times it was free to go back and have the clove dressing packed into the wound, which provides almost immediate relief. Then antibiotics as well

Id check out if thfollow up would cost because Im sure it wont e

ensayers · 27/01/2023 21:24

Both times I had a tooth out I got dry socket. Memories of the taste of the gunge, when the padding came out the socket still makes me want to barf.

Habber · 27/01/2023 21:26

I don’t know why they tell people it’s ‘impossible’ or rare; it isn’t.
i had it in all 4 sockets after GA wisdom teeth extraction and honestly felt like I didn’t want to live anymore. The clove thing they put in did help

diaryofadyslexic · 27/01/2023 21:27

I've had it and it's so so painful.

Hope you get better soon!

frogswimming · 27/01/2023 21:29

I had one. There was a tiny chip of tooth that got left behind. It worked its way out. I think in the meantime the dentist gave me clove oil on cotton wool to put in hole? Can't remember exactly.

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 27/01/2023 21:29

Call the emergency dental line, they should be able to get you seen by an emergency dentist. DH had to do the same when he got dry socket. They packed it & all was fine. I don't think it cost more than £25

Choppies · 27/01/2023 21:32

So much inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics on this thread the mind boggles. A dry socket is not the same as an infection, it’s the loss of the blood clot leaving the bony socket exposed and not healing.

A GP won’t be able to help so don’t even waste your time, just see a dentist.

Blanketpolicy · 27/01/2023 21:33

Had it last year and was prescribed an antibiotic. Gentle rinising with salt water as advised did, unexpectedly, help.

It was a nightmare for 3-4 nights as every time I lay down in bed (even propped upright) was agony and after a few minutes I had to stand up, but once antibs kicked in was ok.

twoandcooplease · 28/01/2023 18:20

Oh my god @iolaus I am flinching reading that. Your luck could not have been worse, so glad you're ok!

Theoscargoesto · 28/01/2023 18:28

I’ve had it after 2 extractions. I’ve given birth twice and I’d happily do it again over the pain of dry socket.

As said, it needs dressing and I’d say it’s an emergency. You might need it dressing a couple of times but the relief is instant. One issue is that you can’t do a lot to prevent it and oral antibiotics don’t help, though can be prescribed. I’ve heard Clove oil works but the bottom line is that a clot hasn’t formed/has dislodged so the bone is exposed. No wonder it hurts but I feel for you it’s quite the worst pain I’ve experienced.

CocoFifi · 28/01/2023 18:35

It's absolute agony. I had it after a lower tooth was taken out. I had to go to the maxiofacial department, at out local hospital. The socket was packed and I was given antibiotics and told to piggy back paracetemol and ibuprofen every two hours. To be honest the painkillers hardly touched it. Took about a week for it to feel bearable

Sexypyjamas · 28/01/2023 18:38

It happened to me. OMFG is all I can say.
Nothing, not a tooth abscess, not even child birth prepared me.
I was like a drug addict with strong painkillers and it lasted two weeks.
I thought it would never stop. It did. Thank God. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 28/01/2023 19:34

I had 2 that then got infected. Horrible… 2 weeks later and I could still barely eat.

I remember my mum kept telling me that I should feel lucky that I didn’t have dry sockets before I went back to the oval surgeon… I kept thinking to myself those poor bastards If mine hurt this bad they must be ready to run out in traffic to end the agony.

Seriously do whatever it takes to get treatment. Don’t wait.
