Is this normal?

When my kids fight my DD says things repeatedly (eg "give it back" literally a hundred times) and this drives me up the wall.

Aibu? Or is there a condition for this? I've heard of misophonia but not sure if this applies to people talking. Thanks.

Sounds like a form of torture to me 😂
Sympathies.

explodingears · 27/01/2023 08:35

It's torture for me, just feel like shutting down or shouting at her to shut up. (I do)

Might be a trigger from my childhood too as my DF used to do this when upset

Anyone else?

Why would there be "a condition for this"? You're irritated by something irritating.

Ludo19 · 27/01/2023 19:25

My ex used to say " in no way, shape or form" all the fuckin time. Usually when he'd made a personal comment to me and if pulled up on it would say this over and over to back peddle about my upset. I also can't bear phrases being said wrongly. My old boss frequently said "you'll need to be more pacific" "keep this on the QC"

Cheekyandfreaky · 27/01/2023 19:25

This is a thing!! I also hate this, and it’s unfortunate because someone I love is guilty of repeating small loops of a song or random catchphrases over and over- argh!

TruffleShuffles · 27/01/2023 19:25

My daughter does this, she’s just turned 4. She does it when she’s not getting her own way, it’s so frustrating as it’s like she’s stuck and you can’t snap her out of it. It’s what she reverts to as a tantrum, thankfully as she’s getting older they are much less frequent.

QueSyrahSyrah · 27/01/2023 19:28

I totally get it OP. I use to have quite a visceral response to things like this when I was a kid, like the walls were closing in on me and sometimes my vision would seem to 'pulse' along with it.

I don't know if I grew out of it, or (because I don't have kids myself) I can now just remove myself from most situations where it might be an issue.

Redcarparkedoutside · 27/01/2023 19:28

It's just called "kids getting on your pip" I think. Mine repeat eachothers names endlessly, makes me want to run away, they'll hopefully grow out of it.

Chamomileteaplease · 27/01/2023 19:31

I wonder if it is a thing yes.

I get it not only in real life but on the TV when say in a comedy programme and they say and do the same thing over and over. Catherine Tate did this. Not funny.

SouthCountryGirl · 27/01/2023 19:33

Same! Was watching a programme where someone said "do you know what I mean?" after he said something. So bloody annoying!

Changingplace · 27/01/2023 19:35

Isn’t this just being irritated by something very irritating? It’s just a natural reaction.

explodingears · 27/01/2023 19:36

Thanks all, seems like this is quite a normal thing to have. I'm glad I'm not the only one

WTF
did you never correct specific
or QT ? What the heck is QC?

Alliwantistobe · 27/01/2023 19:37

It drives me mad.
I did read on a similar thread before that repetitive sounds are used as a form of torture and I can see why.

This!
It doesn’t have to be a ‘thing’
It’s just very annoying.
Anything that repeats over and over is bloody irritating. Especially if it’s something with negative connotations like kids fighting.

Ludo19 · 27/01/2023 19:39

@365names yeah i did correct her lol QC is a judge. She also used to say "I gave my husband a prep? talk" assuming she meant pep.

Oh yes, that reminds me Britney's "oh baby one more time" being played endlessly is used as a form of torture in one of the prisons. That would write me off completely

I once worked in an office where the colleague on the desk behind me used this phrase continually. By the end of each day I wanted to tear her throat out.

Mum97540 · 27/01/2023 20:15

I worked with a horrible bully of a woman who'd say "happy days" every other sentence. It makes my flesh creep hearing that phrase ever since.

explodingears · 27/01/2023 20:19

I hate being called endlessly when I'm in the toilet doing no 2

chilloutzone · 27/01/2023 20:22

Yes! I hate when people say 'you know' after everything or in between everything ahhh

ThingsChristmasJumper · 27/01/2023 20:22

Colleague has a couple of well used phrases. It grates but his first language isn’t English so I grit my teeth and smile through it.

Rattymare · 27/01/2023 20:26

When people add "like" at the end of a sentence!!

Because everything needs a label these days
