It’s looking like I will be prescribed clomid to help with TTC.
I googled it and scared myself as it says it can cause a higher risk of ovarian cancer. Is there truth to this? Want to know the scary bits before seeing the fertility specialists! X

No medical expert at all but isn't that if you use it over a year? Let's hope it's only a month or two for you.

Used it myself but had to move to IVF due to other issues.

Good luck! 🤞🤞

Well the thing to remember here (speaking more as a statistician than an expert on clomid) is even a relatively big increase in a very small risk is still a very small risk.

NOTE not a doctor these are made up statistics

say 1 in a 10,000 women aged 35 would get ovarian cancer this year. If taking clomid for a year would double your risk that would mean that if you had 10,000 35 year old women taking Clomid you might expect 2 of them to develop ovarian cancer.

Things I know about ovarian cancer - two thirds of women diagnosed are over 55 - only about 8% of ovarian cancers are found in women under 45, lifetime risk of a woman being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at some point is 1 in 78. having the gene is the biggest risk factor.

I used it for 6 months when i was about 27/28, that was about 25 years ago

I'm not sure where the you got the information but you may find this reassuring until you can discuss with hcp
"Ovarian Cancer Risk
The strongest evidence that Clomid and other ovarian-stimulating drugs do not increase the risk of ovarian cancer comes from a Cochrane Review.4

The review included studies from 1990 through February 2013. The studies compiled together included 182,972 women.
Seven of the studies found no evidence of increased ovarian cancer in women who use any fertility drug (including Clomid) when comparing their risk to other women with fertility problems who did not use fertility drugs.
According to the review, studies that did find increased cancer risk were not reliable because they failed to take into consideration the risk of infertility itself or the sample size was too small to draw conclusions."

i was on the strongest strength for 4 years from jan 2005-oct 2009
the last cycle i conceived
i never had any side effects then or since

i have severe PCOS and never had a period,(im 42) i never started and no medication\procedure would bring one .
i was told i was infertile at 17

i caught somehow for my first in 03 naturally but was trying from 2003,2nd was the fertility tablets.

i wasn't eligible for ivf so with out clomid son 2 would not be here as since his birth in 2010 i haven't caught since and like i said we were using nothing

not your question but ive never been on any contraception,no pill, no condoms(ive only ever had the one sexual partner and we were together for 22 years,he left me in 2020) so ive never had any hormonal chemically in my body
