Never have i had to work out the area of a triangle since school so why isn't Sunak proposing we teach kids proper life skills instead? My dad never taught me and would have been better placed lecturing me on mortgages than harping on about pythagoras ( again...never used).

Some modules on critical thinking and techniques of misinformation would be handy too.

My husband always voted Conservative until our children asked him why and openly mocked his meaningless slogan like answers.

(The kids got an education on misinformation during the Brexit campaign.)

I think we'd have a healthier political debate and a better country if more people weren't so easy to manipulate, derail with whataboutery, and knew the difference between a valid argument and a meaningless slogan.

Not all Tory voters are 'manipulated' or vote on slogans 🙄

This thread is about maths FFS

Labour voters are no less likely to be swayed by media bias and lack of robust economic knowledge.

It’s a kind of leftist superiority to think otherwise.

Dc are better off equipped with a good mathematical/ economics and media foundation and taught to think own views and vote independently from parents.

Something on reading comprehension and bringing your own bias with you to distort what others are saying might be useful too.

Because the world doesn’t revolve around you?

MarshaBradyo · 07/02/2023 10:53

Oh well your words. Think about your own bias as that’s what comes across 🤷‍♂️

I thought was about useful life skills for children.

Learning about the techniques of misinformation wouldn't only help people understand the current state of our politics.

It would help with things like advertising, insurance, finance deals, and careful wording that doesn't always mean what we think it means in any walk of life.

I think the idea that all of life's educational needs can or should be met before the age of 18 and should be delivered by teachers incredibly weird.

Basic personal budgeting - yeah, sure.

Mortgages, pensions etc - I think this would be better delivered as an online course that was heavily pushed from 18 onwards, but available to all.

The purpose of a school is to provide education. Schools teach about sex ed, cooking classes, automotive classes, I even needed to learn how to line dance in gym class...wtf why was that even needed and that one was mandatory. People on here say it's the parents job but most kids do not like to take advice from there parents anyways and are more likely to listen to someone else. Besides I had my parents lecture me about reinterment when them selves did not have a retirement account and because of that I ignored them. We can get into a whole discussion about how to raise a kid but the fact is no one is perfect and we cannot expect parents to teach about money and finance when most of them have no back ground in that. A parents duty is more to teach respect, discipline, right vs wrong ect
