Transport asbestos in car

Sorry to post here but want to know if I’m being OTT. We have recently had some building work done and our builder discovered some asbestos pipe in the garden. He wanted to bury it under the foundations but I stopped him and contacted our local council. We have a recycling and tip centre near us that will dispose of small pieces of asbestos. The builder put the asbestos in the bags provided by the council. Is it ok to put bags in the car … I have anxiety and this is worrying me.

YABU. A simple Google search comes up with the information you need to safely transport and protect yourself from asbestos.

Here’s my council’s advice:

Take the following steps to ensure that the asbestos does not contaminate your car or van:

Spray the asbestos cement with water.
Double wrap or double bag the asbestos cement with heavy duty polythene.
Ensure the wrapping is secured with tape.
Make sure that none of the vehicle occupants have access to the asbestos waste.
On arrival at the centre, inform a member of staff so that they can direct you to the special container.
Make sure the wrapping is still securely in place before unloading the asbestos cement.

YABU.

You could put the bags into clean bin bags if you are worried. I think the risk of contamination is very small if the asbestos is properly bagged up.

Could the builder take it to the tip for you?

I personally would expect the builder to dispose of the rubbish (unless agreed before that you would)
Can you call the council and ask their opinion, also was the builder allowed to remove it if it had asbestos? My DS had to get another lot of people in to remove when it was found in their garage

YANBU to be concerned, if you don't want to manage it yourself and the builder won't, pay someone else to do it.
Your builder sounds well dodgy, burying that kind of waste is not how it should be disposed of.
