To report this parent to the police?

A man who lives near me takes his son, probably year 1 or 2, to school everyday as a passenger on an electric scooter. Sometimes they wear helmets, sometimes not. He always drives in the road, usually at the speed limit (20mph) and takes the corners pretty fast. They also have various bags etc. so it looks pretty unsteady. The child stands in front of the adult.

We live in central London so the streets are pretty busy, even though the speed limit is 20. (Lots of motorbikes, Deliveroo drivers etc.)

My husband thinks I'm being ridiculous. Would you report this to the police?

I will add that the man is often looking around, almost as if hoping passing female pedestrians will think wow, how cool is that, a scooter and a kid.

😂😂

TBH, this basically makes your entire post look ridiculous.

I think you have a crush on him..

Yup, she probably looks at them and thinks "Wow, look at that cool guy, his scooter and a kid! 😍"

Aaaand this is the bit that makes your safety concerns sound completely mad, because in fact what's bothering you is that you think a complete stranger is performance parenting on an e-scooter, and his 'act' is aimed at a female audience. And that it's clearly effective...

There's a man at DS's (admittedly mildly hippy) school who arrives to pick up his seven-year-old on a unicycle. Admittedly, he doesn't attempt to take her home on it... There's also another man who jogs to pick up his son in the warmer months, wearing only running shorts and shoes.

Catspyjamas17 · 26/01/2023 11:09

Why are people interested in speculating on what his motives might be?

Someone doing this is a prize twat, end of.

Wdib78 · 26/01/2023 11:11

I'm assuming you're talking about the type of scooter that is illegal on highways and oavements anyway? There's been a couple of deaths locally of people using them. If he gets caught im guessing a fine and confiscation of the scooter, worse case scenario he crashes and kills someone or his kid and himself. Not sure if the police would act on it if you reported it, they haven't got the resources to, I doubt.

Because that's what the OP is doing. She thinks he's collecting female glances for applause.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

He's clearly not looking admiringly at the OP though!

I am constantly amazed at the number of women on this site who seem to spend an inordinate amount of time policing other people's lives! They probably complain about how hard they work and never have enough time. Stop being to nosey and you'll have loads more time.

TiddleyWink · 26/01/2023 11:20

I’ve seen similar and it makes me feel sick seeing little kids on those things without helmets. YANBU.

People are taking the mick out of the last part of your post but I know exactly the kind of bloke you mean, clearly really pleased with themselves and thinking the women will swoon at a man doing the school run in such a ‘manly’ and cool way 🙄

The PP who didn’t report and the child later died must feel horrendous (not that it’s her fault of course but you would) - if a parent doesn’t protect their own child then I would hope as a society someone else would, rather than ‘minding their own business’ and letting an avoidable accident happen.

Some of the posters on this thread really need to grow up.

And why would that be so unlikely? Men never do anything to show off to women do they? That is so extraordinary and very unlikely 🙄🤔

He'd be pretty thick not to be looking around whilst riding an electric scooter on the road don't you think?

LakeTiticaca · 26/01/2023 11:36

Turning a blind eye to things people know are putting children at risk is how abusers get away with harming children.
Then follows all the hand wringing when yet another child ends up dead

SoupDragon · 26/01/2023 11:36

(I mean' I don't think it's a great indicator of intelligence to have a small child on it with him but at least hers aware of his surroundings!)

I think it’s proven beyond doubt that he’s pretty thick, given he rides a child along roads on an illegal electric scooter with no helmet…his lack of intelligence isn’t really a question mark!

Well, you've clearly missed the point which is exactly the reason I clarified it.

This. Everyone in society has a moral responsibility to help ensure the vulnerable are safe and protected. It’s a fundamental pillar of a civilised society. Sad that so many people see it as nosiness and sneer and mock at anyone with a conscience who wants to report anything.

Our posts crossed, I didn’t see your clarification! And I do get your point, I just don’t agree with it. I’m pretty sure most women can easily tell the difference between a man glancing over his shoulder to check for cars and the kind of man we have all experienced, showboating and assuming female eyes are on him at all times. I’m giving the OP the benefit of the doubt that she can tell the difference?

StarDolphins · 26/01/2023 11:46

Definitely think there’s a romance blossoming here, you’re looking round, he’s looking round…..

Are you sure it’s not you that thinks ‘wow, how cool is that’

msbevvy · 26/01/2023 11:48

If I saw someone doing this on a regular basis I wouldn't hesitate to report it. A girl died on one of these things just round the corner from us.

Aldidl · 26/01/2023 12:06

I used to work for a retailer that sold these scooters and my DBF is an ITU nurse. These things are so dangerous . YANBU

I was on your side until the last paragraph. Now I think you're just mental.

Back2Back2t · 26/01/2023 12:41

This is a wind up, surely? 😂😂😂

jtaeapa · 26/01/2023 12:41

only one rider is allowed on a voi scooter

i would probably just ignore it

Helen901 · 26/01/2023 12:42

I thought they were illegal in public? Its an accident waiting to happen. Id report
