Teachers striking but setting work

Surely you’re either open for business or closed? If I’m taking a day off work, I’m taking the kids out and having some fun. We’re not staying in doing ‘online learning’ 🙄 I support the strike but don’t think work should be given out for that day - defeats the object!

Striking teachers shouldn't be setting work. However, where a school is closed, staff not striking should still be working as normal.

IME, which I'm sure varies from school to school, there aren't actually that many going out on strike. That said, they don't have to tell us, so maybe we just dont know but of our 70 teachers, we only have 2 who have said they will be striking and 56 have said they won't. One even told me that she voted for the strike but has decided not to suffer the pay deduction. I'd be keeping that quiet if I was her!

But do the work or don't, no one will care.

I think it depends what year your child is in. As far as I know my ds school is staying open but if it wasn't I would welcome online learning because I have child in GCSE years. I would feel difrently if he was in primary.

This is primary aged children.

I'm not doing anything work related. If I'm not being paid, I'm going to have a relaxing day at home!

Busybody2022 · 26/01/2023 16:49

We are being set work and we will not be doing it.

Forever42 · 26/01/2023 16:52

Is it for every class? The only way I can see it being possible is if one or two class teachers are not striking but the school has to be closed as there aren't enough adults to ensure safety, so those teachers are setting work for their classes? Otherwise no, the point of the strike is that you don't do any work!

It doesn't matter whether it's welcomed or not. Striking teachers are withdrawing labour, so do not have to provide work. Non striking teachers should only teach their usual timetable and not that of a striking colleague. There is no requirement to 'cover'.

Even when it's a snow day I don't bother logging on! You don't have to unless your kids want to 🤫

Teachers can't win - if they offer nothing on strike days they are "harming kids education" - if they set work they are still wrong.
