I need a hobby!

I often hear people having 'hobbies', sometimes even multiple hobbies. I love reading and I do it almost daily, I love working out three times a week, but other than that I have no hobbies. I love travelling too, but that's surely not a hobby, since I do it two, three times tops a year.

I am 30, no children as of yet - had a miscarriage in November, working on it... I work full time, but I do need a distraction from the whole fertility saga. I am also not particularly crafty!

What are your hobbies?

Thank you!

I tend to fill my seasons differently, I go full pace in the warmer 6 months with gardening, camping, cycling, hiking, adventures, days out etc. Then take the pace right back in the colder months of the year spending the time reading, baking, trying out different art/craft (paint, marbling, wool crafts). Currently applying to be a guide dog puppy raiser and would like to try macram and pottery throwing this year. I wrote a bucket list which helps with planning things in

I love this! Thank you! Pottery sounds amazing, I'll look into it!

Hillwalking
Birdwatching
Keeping an aquarium
Join a book group

Honestly, I checked if there's a book group where I live and there isn't. I even thought about creating myself a book club, or finding an online one. I'd love this!

Family history! It’s a good introvert hobby - I can lose myself for hours researching! DH thinks it looks like work but I just find it so therapeutic.

pensionconfusion · 27/01/2023 06:50

Jewellery making

MassiveSalad22 · 27/01/2023 06:52

My current hobbies are:

crochet - started in September and have just finished the spicier life blanket so it’s quite satisfying that you can get making big/tricky looking things quite quickly.

Choir - I have always sung, I cringe at group stuff but it’s good to get out of your comfort zone!!

Watercolours and art - took up in the pandemic and taught myself and am now alright at it!! Glad I stuck with it as it was hard for me in the beginning. Solely YouTube taught!

Love sprucing the house up, maybe not a hobby but better than finding it a chore

That’s it at the mo really! Love a hobby.

I have a telescope in the loft that I got last Xmas and need to set up still but want to! And keep meaning to learn something on the kids’ ukulele (which actually originally was mine 😄)

Zipadeebooyah · 27/01/2023 06:53

@readingismycardio

Definitely set up your own. Do you have a local library? Or even do one online if no other options. I know someone who joins a monthly dungeons and dragons game online.

BMrs · 27/01/2023 06:57

I love to read too, go walking and I've just joined a ladies beginner cricket team. Never played before and I'm actually quite good and it's really lovely.

I'm hoping to start Pilates but struggling to find a class local to me on the days/times I attend. I know you can do lessons online but I'd prefer to go in person.

Before lockdown I was going to Lindy hop dance classes too but that folded during the pandemic.

Breadcrumbsforall · 27/01/2023 06:59

I make quilts .. that sounds really tedious but I find it calming as you have to concentrate. And it uses all sorts of little bits of fabric so it's really cheap. DH does archery several times a week and loves it.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 27/01/2023 07:27

I learned to crochet about a year ago and I love it. I'd say I'm probably verging on the intermediate side of beginner now. I've made all sorts - earwarmer head bands, tube scarves, coffee cup sleeves, cardigans and jumpers. I'm currently working on a poncho.

I love it because it's creative, it is purposeful, and the yarns are just so gorgeous. I would crochet non-stop if I could, but unfortunately I have to work for a living. Humbug!

MassiveSalad22 · 27/01/2023 07:41

And another pro for crochet is that you can’t multitask while doing it!! Well you can listen to the tv but that’s about it. Good for me who needs help to focus usually.

GreenShadow · 27/01/2023 07:51

I do a lot of the things listed above, but hadn't even thought of some of them as hobbies:
The standard reading (and i did set up a book group - still going 5 years later, despite all the lockdowns).
Puzzles (jigsaws online, sudoku, Worldle/Quordle etc)
Walking
Choir
Groups like WI (you don't have to be old..)
About to start occasional volunteering in local community shop.
Playing Pokemon Go (which takes up FAR too much of my time)

There's probably others. But they are all just part of life

popsoda · 27/01/2023 08:04

I got a circular knitting machine for Christmas and love it . No knitting experience required! It's so addictive !

OfDumplings · 27/01/2023 08:17

Longest lasting hobbies for me are hiking and gaming, decades. I have also sung in four choirs for a number of years. Though I am currently not in one.

One of the best I ever did but the teacher moved away was belly dancing, the other most enjoyable were pottery and art classes. The belly dancing and pottery lasted for about three years. I took qualifications in pottery.

Hingey · 27/01/2023 08:50

I knit / crochet in the house and shoot in the woods (bow and arrow) three times a week. Both highly addictive Smile

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 27/01/2023 08:51

Following this post thank you for starting it OP. I read a lot and have 4 lively dogs. I used to walk a lot but a health Condition means I can't. All these suggestions are fabulous. I'd love to crochet xxx

Ohhhh, I love all of these! I was always worried about knitting, because I'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to - but I might give it a go!

Crochet is easier to learn imo. Only one hook and tends to work up faster so can see the progress more quickly. I’ll warn you though, both crochet and knitting are addictive. Don’t even get me started on buying yarn which turns out to be another hobby in itself

I love the bow thing too, but I'm pretty sure I'd end up without a limb/blind Blush this is amazing!

I'm more and more tempted about this! How did you learn? Did you find it easy at first?

Chefwithnolife · 27/01/2023 09:21

I don't really have much time to myself (my shifts are either long (12-11pm), split (10-3 then 5-10) or all day(10-11)

I get 2 days off a week, which are normally Wednesday/thursday, they are mostly filled with running the house, batch cooking and taking my dad to appointments or shopping, when I do get time to myself I like to read, crochet, and when the weather is good, garden.

Iv decided ill have more hobbies when I retire 🫠

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 27/01/2023 09:25

Singing in a choir is so therapeutic. My community choir has people of v different abilities and all are welcome.
I also knit and crochet. I learnt to crochet from you tube in lockdown and I love it because it can be 3D so I have made toys, a veg box full of crochet fruit and veg etc as gifts. I knit my own cardigans, jumpers etc and knitted blankets for my eldest and his GF to take to uni. Part way thru another for my second DS.
I like jigsaws and walkng too.
And my main passion outside of winter is the garden.

Lallyhead1 · 27/01/2023 09:30

I would really love to crochet or knit too. Which is easier and are there any online tutorials anyone has used?

I'm more and more tempted about this! How did you learn? Did you find it easy at first?

I googled and found a woman local to me that did one hour lessons. I went to see her maybe three times, at first to learn the basic stitches and then I went back with a pattern and we worked through it together. The pattern was just for squares but pretty fancy, elaborate ones and involved quite a few new techniques.

This was January 2019 and since then I have carried on by myself practicing and practicing. Occasionally I will look up a particular stitch or technique on you tube, although I prefer written instructions mainly.

At first I just worked on blankets and elaborate squares, but gradually started to do more complex items. I am enjoying making dolls now, this was one I was working on yesterday, just need to sew the hair in place.

I need a hobby!
readingismycardio · 27/01/2023 09:32

@Aprilx the doll is beautiful!!! I'd actually buy something like this. Have you considered selling them? Maybe etsy!

Gardening, choir, cycling, hiking, (before I was put up by snobbery and cliquiness) rowing. You could also volunteer at a youth group or spend some regular time with an elderly neighbour.

Thank you. I am going to make her a prince next.
