What’s the easiest way to wash my car (cheap/free)

I don’t mind bucket and sponge work. What I totally hate is to get the hose pipe out, clear all the twists, and then to wind it back in after the washing is done. Hate it.
Can I sponge scrub the car with car washing liquid just before a rain storm and leave it to wash off in the rain!?

Fill the bucket with clean water and throw it over the car - probably need to do it a few times to get all the suds off. It wont get that sparkly clean effect unless you buff or polish it with a chamois leather or similar though. Usually an outside clean doesnt cost more than 10/15 where I am, which if I had it would be worth it to not have to bother!

Orangesare · 25/01/2023 20:52

I go to the local buy time jet wash. I can usually shampo and rinse it for £2.

hornyyorkie · 25/01/2023 20:52

I don't wash mine ever, just clean the number plate if it looks illegible. Life's too short!

tealandteal · 25/01/2023 20:54

I just use one bucket to get the car wet, one bucketful of water to wash it with soap and one to wash the soapy water off. Not this time if towards though because I don’t want to make an ice rink

Slimjimtobe · 25/01/2023 20:54

I just shop around and find the cheapest place (5 quid) and only go once a month

I live in a rainy place though 😂

Tesco jet wash is £2 for a few minutes- hot water and foam, jet wash off, spray gloss. Honestly, it’s so easy. £1 for a few minutes on the vacuum. Car gleaming. Unless you’ve got a huge car you can easily do it in a £2 wash. Then do the windows with glass cleaner and dust the dash etc when you get back on your drive.

Me neither but to my absolute horror my very nice but very tidy CEO has asked for a lift to an event. I can't say no as I'm going and driving past. He has never seen my car. It is 22 years old and we have had 4 kids and 5 dogs use it in that time. It's tidy but filthy. I am going to have to shell out for a professional clean as it's just to shameful.

Warspite · 25/01/2023 20:56

I use about 4 buckets to wash my SUV.
All warm water.
First 2 with car shampoo.
Last two buckets with plain water to rinse.

IF the wheels have a lot of brake dust I might use an extra bucket with shampoo to give them a bit of extra attention.
I fry with an old rag or two.

Think of it as your workout for the day! Fresh air, exercise. Great stuff.

Warspite · 25/01/2023 20:57

Fry?? I meant dry, with an old rag.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/01/2023 20:57

Just a few quid for the jet wash every few months keeps it looking reasonable for almost no effort.

I usually go after it has been pooped on by birds to prevent the paint getting damaged.

mistermagpie · 25/01/2023 20:57

My car is six years old and I've never washed it once... Blush

Mmmmdanone · 25/01/2023 20:57

My mum gave me a bottle of this spray stuff that you just spray and wipe. Can't remember the name just now but she's a big fan of it!

Planta · 25/01/2023 20:59

Wait for rain!

MadamYouAreAdam · 25/01/2023 21:05

I only ever washed my car just before an MOT or a garage visit. Windows when needed but I used buckets of water from a rain tub. I do live in a very rainy place though. The trouble with letting the rain wash suds off is that unless it's windy it'll only wash off from one direction. If you don't like buckets or hose pipe you could buy a cheap pump action sprayer the kind some people use for pesticides.

Same here, until we bought a white car 🤦‍♀️. Both our previous cars were black.

Sounds amazing, would you mind asking her what it’s called. Please 🙏🏻

It’s possible to get it to a reasonable state with just a good quality hoover, room freshener and wet wipes.

Its easy if you just get a large grocery bag and empty the car completely.

It’s a large car - I’ve been shelling out £20 each time. They’ve all put the prices up (understandably)

Never tried this. Sounds good.

Do you carry your own car wash liquid and sponge? Or just jet wash with water?

Actually, I tell a lie... I do wash it and hoover for funerals!

No, one of the settings on the jet washer is a hot foam brush, soap comes out of the big hose/broom and you brush it all over the car, then jet wash it off. Honestly it’s dead easy.

MatildaTheCat · 25/01/2023 21:18

Black and white cars are equally awful for showing the dirt. My current sort of sage green car is fab for disguising it. I do, however go to the drive through ca wash every few months. It’s pretty good.

Then lift out the mats and do a bit of hoovering and it’s all good.

WhineWhineWINE · 25/01/2023 21:19

Leave it outside my house with the keys in - my DH won't be able to stop himself 🪣 🧽
