Who has been eating fruit from my garden?

Our garden is fully fenced. I left a small piece of apple in a little bowl the other day (leftovers from a baby niece) for the birds. No birds touched it all day. Next morning it was all gone! I put some fruit out last night, it’s again gone by morning! I haven’t seen any hedgehogs in my garden ever, only little mice that too in summer. Didn’t see the mice for months now. What/who is eating the fruit? I’d love to continue feeding if they won’t cause nuisance to my neighbours.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow ooh, fabulous. Guessing from your name you are in Canada.

Mollymalone123 · 27/01/2023 07:25

Probably rats.they can get in anywhere.and you won’t see poop-maybe tunnelling somewhere to get in or they just climb the fence.leaving food out at dusk/ nighty time unfortunately encourages rats

The most likely is rats. I don’t know why you’re so insistent it isn’t foxes though. I doubt there’s a garden in the country that hasn’t had a fox visit.

I am late to the party, but I wanted to vote fox. I have one that visits my garden, zone 2 London, that sleeps in a tree. They can climb. I saw one on the roof of bungalow once.

Did you find out what it was op?

Wilkolampshade · 02/02/2023 11:06

Fox OP. We leave bits and bobs on the shed roof for our fox. He scrabbles along the (well over) 6 ft fences and snoozes up there. Keeps the cats away which gives the birds a chance too. We're in the middle of London.

Probably a MNer, I’m always seeing how it’s fine to pick fruit from other people’s gardens

99% chance of rats. Don’t leave food on the ground in open containers unless you actually want a colony of rats in your garden. If you want to feed the birds, get a proper bird feeder and hang it up.
