You’re looking very miserable today!

Is what someone said to me today!

I was quite taken aback by something that happened to me yesterday. I was in Tesco before the rush to do the school run and I walked past the same guy a few times and he met my eye. (Just because he seemed to be staring at me)

When I finished my shopping he was outside and stopped me, (whether he had been waiting for me I don’t know) and told me I was looking very miserable today, and that it was his New Year’s resolution to tell people when they look sad!?!?!?

Admittedly I probably did have my RBF on but lots was going through my mind and having some difficulties in life at the moment (difficulties = parent with stage 4 cancer, only found out it had spread a few days ago, child struggling with bullying, another child struggling with food, financial stress)

I definitely wasn’t thinking I need to smile at this stranger who keeps on staring at me

Rude and a bit creepy vibes to be honest. Maybe that wasn’t the intention maybe was trying to be kind.

AIBU to think he was being rude and inappropriate

I'd've replied 'it's my NY resolution to tell people to fuck right off when they're being twats!'

BlueBooh · 25/01/2023 11:08

Men that say "Smile it may never happen"

Fuck off you misogynist twat.

I've got a reply ready now "Would you say that to a man?"

Ignore the dickhead.

youshouldnthaveasked · 25/01/2023 11:09

Creep alert. Be careful

Muu · 25/01/2023 11:12

Tell him to stay away!

you don’t owe it to anyone to smile, you’re entitled to look miserable.

I wonder if he would stop some big volatile bruiser of a bloke and say the same thing… I guess not.

OwwwMuuuum · 25/01/2023 11:13

Erk. I would have mentioned him to security at the store. Creepy.

Dotjones · 25/01/2023 11:13

I don't want to worry you but this is the sort of thing stalkers start out by doing. He sees nothing wrong in following you in the shop or confronting you with his "advice". Chances are he'll just move on to another unsuspecting person but just be careful for a little while, maybe change your routine or go to a different supermarket. I mean you shouldn't have to, and don't have to, but it might be better to avoid this guy.

Smilethoughyourheartisaching · 25/01/2023 11:21

Hello, thanks for the replies. I didn’t know whether I’d missed some misplaced kindness in his exchange.

i will definitely mention to security. I didn’t see any bags so I think he is some kind of lurker.

will change my routine so I avoid the supermarket at this time.

That's the stupidest New Years resolution I have ever heard of. He should make some new ones which focus on bettering himself rather than winding up people who are going about their business.

blackbeardsballsack · 25/01/2023 11:24

If I was feeling miserable, there would be nothing more likely to piss me off more than a random man saying that to me.

If I just had my usual resting bitch face but otherwise feeling ok, that comment would make me feel miserable!

I cannot think of anything that it achieves?!

Aposterhasnoname · 25/01/2023 11:26

I’d have pointed at the nearest hard looking bloke and said “he looks sad, you going go tell him too?” Fifty quid says he wouldn’t.

potniatheron · 25/01/2023 11:27

Wow what a twat. YR definitely NBU. It's a sexist trope of a comment. Put it this way, I bet he wouldn't say it to my 6ft4 15 stone DH who has permanent resting bitch face!
