Vitamins. Are they a waste of time or no?

I’m a bit of a vitamin junkie. I believe they will help alleviate all the day to day issues I have (thinning hair, gum disease, bit of anxiety). Lots of medical professionals have suggested them so I diligently take Vitamin B12, D, probiotics every day. It’s expensive and I wonder if it’s worth it? Has anyone seen real benefits for their health ?

also the tablets always state take 1-2 a day… how do you know what to do? It’s obviously even more expensive doing 2 of all of them!

Vit D - i’m an office worker, rarely see the sun for 6 months of the year. Had a D test, so low, it turns out it was the cause of bone pain.

Evening Primrose Oil. Effectively cured my mums arthritis. She was on a drug trial with it - they gave her bucketloads of it. I take it now as i can feel the arthritis starting in my hands, have some of the disfigurement too. It alleviates the pain.

Glocosomine. Helps recovery after been working in the garden etc.

Im 53. I swear by all of the above.

I take a multi vitamin, but only really for the D and selenium. I don’t think the rest of it is doing anything but I like the taste of them!

would definitely say good quality D is essential for most in the UK, especially for people with darker skin.

Selenium is hard to get in diet and I guess I’d make sure B12 was upped if I had a plant based diet.

I take a vitamin D, a magnesium & calcium, a multivitamin, and inositol every day. Tbh they have been life changing! It's bloody dark in Scotland and the vitamin D meant seasonal affective disorder this year, and the rest have been hugely helpful too in many ways.

I am taking B12 sprays and patches.
Am clinically diagnosed with a deficiency, and want to avoid needles.

I take a multi vitamin and vitamin D every day. I'm taking 200% of the recommended dose of vitamin D, but it was seriously low a year ago. I assume I can't OD on it.

My hair looks better, I feel so much better. More energy. Sleeping better. Less joint pain.

They aren't expensive either. The dr told me the cheap ones are just as good.

People’s anecdotal evidence will only get you so far, scientific research is far from perfect but there is a lot in this area. This guy (and his team) has reviewed all available medical evidence on the efficacy of supplements and has come to this Here conclusion:

There's only so much the body can absorb, so unless you have a medical deficiency, you're mostly just buying ingredients for very expensive urine (to quote Sheldon).

The biggest difference I've noticed is the effects of taking magnesium. It's helped with pain in my ankles, as in the pain has gone and it's helped significantly with my chronic constipation. I no longer take dulcolax to "go" because the magnesium has helped so much!

I've been taking vitamin d for a few years since I found out my levels were low.
Recently started taking a multivitamin daily because quite honestly my diet isn't great right now. Cost of living plus a divorce means that my food budget is restricted and I'm not eating as well as I used to. I make sure my 4yo gets all the good healthy stuff but I'm mostly existing on crap.

Yes you can OD on vitamin D. You can take up to 4000iu safely per day. Any more (unless instructed by a doctor) can be dangerous www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-d/#:~:text=If%20you%20choose%20to%20take,aged%2011%20to%2017%20years.

I take a 1000iu of vit D. The multi vitamin has 5ug of vitamin D3.
