For those who were growing up when Grange Hill started in 1978.
Did you parents try to stop you watching it?

No, but I wouldn’t let my DC watch Tracey Beaker.

Biscuitsneeded · 24/01/2023 20:44

I was allowed to watch, yes, but quite a few friends weren't. I didn't really get to like it until about 1980, though. I was born in 72 and I think I was too young to understand it before then. I remember Tucker, Benny, Trisha Yates etc but I didn't really start following the storyline until Zammo, Jackie, Fay and Annette, Roland etc. Quite a few were decent actors - and a couple were pretty ropey!

LIZS · 24/01/2023 20:45

No. Dbro watched it so I did , even though still at primary. Remember the drowning in the swimming lesson as scary.

Grange Hill was allowed because it was on BBC, I was allowed to watch pretty much anything inc Threads, but wasn't allowed to watch anything on ITV....

I think that's why I was allowed to watch it. It was on the BBC, so my parents just trusted it. No ITV for us either Grin

matthewstirling · 24/01/2023 20:46

My mum was a secondary teacher and felt that it was tame by comparison. Was definitely allowed to watch it.

Divebar2021 · 24/01/2023 20:46

Ro-Land ( if you know you know)

Yep I watched it…. I don’t remember any friends saying they weren’t allowed to watch it either.

SparkyBlue · 24/01/2023 20:47

Yes we were. My mother used to do massive eye rolls when she would hear certain people weren't allowed to watch certain stuff. She used to say the parents had notions about themselves

ghostyslovesheets · 24/01/2023 20:39

No - but for a while we were a Blue Peter house - no Magpie allowed!

If Grange Hill had been on ITV, I know for certain I wouldn’t have been allowed to watch it!

slowquickstep · 24/01/2023 20:55

Parents didn't like the programme but allowed me to watch it.

Goodread1 · 24/01/2023 20:55

My parents didn't stop me watching this , it was just general background tv show to my childhood/teens years,

am not sure. Whether my parents knew about the more controversial episodes themes or not,

Obviously just say No to drugs was definitely one of the most well known one and assume it would have got a large census of parents Approval.

I'd always assumed it was just my mother who had this thing about ITV. Unless the two of you are my sisters that makes at least 3 mad mothers. What was that about?

unclebuck · 24/01/2023 20:57

I was allowed to watch everything I wanted. Grange Hill was ok, Tizwas was EPIC and The Young Ones was the best thing that ever happened.

Andrelaxzz · 24/01/2023 20:58

We watched everything we wanted!

Hohofortherobbers · 24/01/2023 20:59

I was allowed, dh is 2 years older and was banned!

I think you might have missed the point of the name Tiswas.

Hadjab · 24/01/2023 21:00

Yep! My mum was a first generation immigrant from West Africa. She was SHOCKED at the disrespect the kids showed the teachers, and the scrapes they found themselves in, and totally thought we’d be influenced by it. She was also a nurse working the night shift, who would regularly fall asleep where she sat, so we’d inevitably end up watching it anyway 🤣

Frenchfancy · 24/01/2023 21:00

Yes. Dad didn't let us but mum did. We had to change channels if he came home.

AuditAngel · 24/01/2023 21:02

No, but my dad worked on it so that may have influenced it!

shinyshoes5566 · 24/01/2023 21:02

Yes banned in our house. Apparently it initiated the decline in standards of the British education system.

desperadodogface · 24/01/2023 21:03

Born 1984 and always had to turn tv off when it came in

hiredandsqueak · 24/01/2023 21:04

Dm didn't approve but let me watch.

Bonjovispyjamas · 24/01/2023 21:04

Yes but only because it was on at tea time 😆

Januaryisshit · 24/01/2023 21:08

Mum97540 · 24/01/2023 20:40

No. My parents didn't really take any notice of what we watched.

Same here

AnnaMagnani · 24/01/2023 21:08

No but DH wasn't allowed to watch it. He wasn't allowed to watch ITV either Shock

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/01/2023 21:08

Our school told us not to watch it but we all did.
