I don’t want to travel with work when pregnant

I will be 35.5 weeks, it’s within the country but a 4 day trip. Around 6 hour drive away.

I have no medical issues, I’m just big and tired and nervous to be away from home so close to my due date.

do I have to go? I’m being pressured.

ask them to complete a risk assessment and what provisioned they’ll be due to you being pregnant

or just tell them the above? What are they going to do if you say no?

Bells3032 · 24/01/2023 20:05

if its within the UK and they've taken into account your situation eg there is a maternity hospital nearby then I doubt there's much you can do to force them. Is there no one else that would go? I wouldn't be keen to send someone nearly 36 weeks pregnant but then I had my daughter at 34 weeks

FrodisCapering · 24/01/2023 20:14

I wouldn't have wanted to travel at that point in a pregnancy. You just don't know when you'll go o to labour.

DestinysGrandchild · 24/01/2023 20:27

I wouldn't have wanted to travel that far for work that far along. You could pretty much go into labour any time.

I mean, I'm sure they can't actually force you. You could technically be on maternity leave at that point anyway. Who would have gone then?

TroubleOverBridgedWater · 24/01/2023 20:27

Nah. I had a "normal", low risk pregnancy and baby arrived at 35+6!

slowquickstep · 24/01/2023 20:42

Surely they don't expect you to sit in a car for 6 hours ?

Can2022getanyworse · 24/01/2023 20:48

Even in the UK they should have some sort of liability insurance for you travelling whilst carrying out work duties.

Can they pay for you to travel by train/private transfer?

Yy to risk assessment. They might change their minds when it includes travel expenses for you and baby (and your car) to get home from a distant hospital...

typopro · 24/01/2023 20:52

I wouldn't go. Can you start your maternity leave at that point or take holidays?

Zanatdy · 24/01/2023 20:54

I wouldn’t want to go that late in pregnancy either. Is it essential? Id just say you’re not fit to travel the day before if they push it. They can’t make you go

CMOTDibbler · 24/01/2023 21:06

I wouldn't go, and I went on a training course an hour away the week I was 34 weeks. Ds arrived on that Friday...

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 24/01/2023 21:08

Sod that, I'd say no. I think they will understand but if not just ask to start maternity leave earlier.

Treetrim · 24/01/2023 21:13

I travelled abroad all through pregnancies and now with children but no way did I do any travel past 33 weeks. It’s just too close to birth and also extremely uncomfortable. If required your GP will likely give you a note saying you are not fit for travel

gogohmm · 24/01/2023 21:23

If you aren't comfortable with doing your job but it's fine from a risk perspective (which it sounds like it is as it's not abroad) then start your maternity leave. It was normal to finish about 35 weeks when I had mine and we got less time overall (40 weeks)

PragmaticWench · 24/01/2023 21:32

Have they done a risk assessment for a heavily pregnant woman being in a car for a six hour drive? I'd also argue that being so far away from your hospital is not acceptable at this stage of the pregnancy.

Emmamoo89 · 24/01/2023 21:34

I wouldn't go x

Hankunamatata · 24/01/2023 21:37

Offer to get the train? Least you can move about.

SiobhanSharpe · 24/01/2023 21:40

When are you due to start maternity leave? Is it at 36 weeks? If so can you take a couple of days annual leave beforehand?
Or see your GP and say you're worried about it, you're already very tired and you're afraid you won't be up to it.

Mariposa26 · 24/01/2023 22:13

I feel for you, I’m currently 31 weeks and would hate this. They should be conducting a risk assessment as others have said. I also think a GP would write you a fit note advising you are not fit for work travel of that length (although ridiculous that you should have to do that and use GP time if work are being unsupportive)

Askinforabaskin · 24/01/2023 22:14

I’d say no. From 22 weeks I told my work that I wanted to limit driving to 2 hours per day after a discussion I had with my midwife about being at risk of getting blood clots in my legs.

my work were more than happy to accommodate and it was noted in my risk assessment.
