IABU posting for traffic but I have a history of health related anxiety.

DD is 5 and took part in a national study which involved a blood test. Results came by post today and lymphocytes are outside of the normal range.

What does this mean? I can't get a doctor's appt for 3 weeks unless I book an emergency appt on the day at 8am tomorrow

Even something simple like a cough or cold can caused raised lymphocytes so don’t panic. Just call the doctor tomorrow.

I'm a GP and I wouldn't worry about it especially if she is otherwise well. It is not far under normal range (if she was aged 6, it would be in normal range according to that chart). Sometimes a recent viral infection can cause slightly lowered lymphocytes.

People’s results are often slightly outside the reference range and it’s normally perfectly ok . The results in question aren’t that far out anyway . If you have health related anxiety I don’t think getting involved in surveys / studies is a very good idea .

well said!

Apologies, just seen they’re slight low not raised. They’re only borderline out of range so would possibly warrant a repeat test. Everything else is normal.

Thank you

Everything else is normal, and if your child is 5 nearly 6 then they’re nearly in range anyway.

Ranges are partially arbitrary and need to be taken in clinical context. If your child is otherwise well then I really wouldn’t be worrying about this. If you hadn’t been taking part in the study you’d be none the wiser!

It's fine. It's normal to have blood results slightly outside of 'normal' ranges and doesn't necessarily indicate a problem. It's different if it's what we call critically outside of normal ranges - that usually does indicate a problem. Your daughters is not.
