Bacterial vaginosis help!

Toomuchinfor · 24/01/2023 15:26

Shamelessly posting here for traffic as I have fire in my unmentionables.

Classic BV - clear discharge, fishy odour. Treated it with a Caneston Balance pessary yesterday which seemed to go well. No itching or odour.

Applied another one today and I'm on fire! Has anyone else had this? The directions say it may temporarily burn but this isn't temporary.

I'm thinking I can't put a mild steroid cream on it because that would feed the bacteria, does that sound right? Can't take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. Vagisil didn't bring any relief.

Last time I treated this with Actigel which worked without the burning fire experience.

Can anyone advise at all? Thank you.

Antibiotics from the doctor?

44PumpLane · 24/01/2023 15:56

Agree ....antibiotics from the doc or ring your local sexual health clinic if you're likely to be seen more speedily by them.

I also find Balance Activ (which I just buy from Amazon) good to keep in the cupboard just in case.

caneston is for thrush not BV go to the doctors and they will prescribe antibiotics as its an imbalance of bacteria that causes it

Toomuchinfor · 24/01/2023 16:45

Thanks for the replies. This preparation is for BV. I know Caneston usually does thrush treatments.

I spoke to the doctor yesterday (before burning) who said this was fine to use.

Antibiotics was the only thing that shifted mine.

Metronidazole from Superdrug pharmacy online

CinnamonTrees · 24/01/2023 22:13

Second the antibiotics. I also had this and turns out I'm allergic to canesten cream. Get sudocrem on you instead.

I’ve used the BV pessaries before and they do sting. I found them very effective I’ve had BV several time and been treated with antibiotics for it just to come back again. The pessaries cleared it right up and if I feel
like it’s comeimb back now I just use one treatment and it’s gone.

Why not antibiotics? Would a man he saying the same if his penis was on fire?? ..get the Meds you need

ripple73 · 22/07/2023 09:27

I’ve suffered from smelly discharge for years. Balance Activ worked only temporarily. I have been in despair over this but a couple of weeks ago I had my coil removed and bingo, all discharge has stopped. The GP said that sometimes bacteria gets stuck on the coil.

DonutsAreNotLunch · 22/07/2023 09:46

I’ve had some very stingy BV treatment applications! Sometimes they really burn especially if you’ve been scratching!

Hankunamatata · 22/07/2023 09:50

Balance activ but have to use them every night for 7 days to work. Antibiotics just made me poorly

Xrays · 22/07/2023 09:53

Steroids won’t feed the bacteria but if you use them too much they can thin the skin which can make it more sore. You need a course of antibiotics via either 111 or your GP.

Xrays · 22/07/2023 09:53

(Oral steroids if taken at high doses can lower overall immunity which can make fungal infections worse but that isn’t the same thing as topical steroid use - I am on steroids life long for Addisons and lupus).

I had a terrible time with BV and tried many of the over the counter remedies that did nothing, in the end I went to a Gum clinic a doctor prescribed me some pessary antibiotic cream and it’s saved me, don’t waste your time with the over counter stuff just get booked in! I also had to change my sanitary towel to natural cotton ones (Holland and Barrett) that may help too, but once I had the pressary antibiotics it went for good!
