AIBU in demanding this?
MP often spout they ent into politics to make things better along with they ahve dedicated their life to it etc etc.

I had an easy job with the coucil, easy becuse I made it eay in part where others sturggled, I did in 20% of the time

An MP must be dedicated to their job/people/country and I'm lost on the fact they can and many dow have other jobs - how can that be so?

They get paid handsomely and we know about the expenses and time off - what more do they wont.

Come next GE, I will only vote for the person that promises not to hold a second post and if all state that then I will vote for the green party

Feel free to post in French if you like, or in correctly spelt English - I am happy either way.
I have no idea why you are getting so cross, I have said I would not do that job for that amount of money. There are a lots of jobs I wouldn’t do for the salary they pay either
At no point have I said we are not paying MPs enough

Ok, so you are saying they are paying them too much?

OP posts:
underneaththeash · 24/01/2023 21:07

They then need to be properly paid.

I totally agree. They make laws to suit themselves. They've shown in the past with the expenses fiasco how utterly greedy they are.

Totally agree. They are MPs for all the wrong reasons. They are in it for themselves

"Trust me and I can bet you that I could do a better job thatn any , yest any member of palrilament. However, when i say something I mean it unlike most of them so I cuold not by an MP as to be an MP you have to keep everyone happy and I could never do that and I am against being paid more than 80 for a 20 hour week - look at Boris, how weeks holidays has he had since being checked out in a bin from number 10 by his own."

I seriously doubt you could "do a better job thatn any , yest any member of palrilament" given that you can't even spell Parliament (or several other words), despite most likely having access to both autocorrect and spellcheck.

In the UK our politicians are paid quite poorly when compared with similar successful democracies. As the saying goes; pay peanuts, get monkeys. And are you really one of those people who thinks that MPs actually just trouser their expenses? Sigh.

"in uk mps paid poorly when compared to eu.."

Tell me who twisted their arm to come mp and earn up to on average 180k a year inc perks, expenses and rent etc?

DomesticShortHair · 25/01/2023 09:31

I’m all for encouraging most politicians to have a second job, or a third, or a fourth. I just want them to leave their first job.

I did a good job as did many others but there were some that gave it a bad name by hanging around enmass outside cafes/etc

I’d rather the country was run by people that are entrepreneurial and hard working than a race to the bottom

Pyewhacket · 25/01/2023 09:41

I don’t think they should be treated different to anybody else and I know plenty of ppl who moonlight.

An "average" MP earns nothing near £180k a year; MPs' salaries are £84,144; some ministers are paid more on top if they hold certain offices of the state, and the PM gets paid more.

You are confusing expenses with salary, and every employed worker in the UK can claim for out of pocket work-related expenses; MPs are no different. If they are required to travel away from home, their expenses are paid. The cost of running their office and paying staff is done via expenses; it would cost the same if paid direct but the way it's done is that the MP pays it direct and then claims the cost back.

You really are incredibly poorly informed if you think that our MPs are earning £180k.

FamousPrincess · 25/01/2023 09:16

I bet you I could.

Perhaps another few years in school learning how to spell, check your work and use a basic computer might be needed first.

😂😂😂

chilloutzone · 27/01/2023 00:19

Every contract I've signed says no second job so from that perspective seems fair. And MPs aren't exactly poorly paid so I don't think it's right, especially if they're not performing for their area well.

DdraigGoch · 27/01/2023 00:29

Isn't a ministerial position effectively a second job?

I would prefer it if MPs stayed grounded in the real world, if that means the odd bank shift in hospital then so be it. If they spend their whole time in Westminster then they will lose touch.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/01/2023 00:33

Hoppinggreen · 24/01/2023 15:22

I wouldn’t do that job for just what it pays

I understand that.

A job where there are massive shake ups every few years (that's assuming you manage to hold onto the seat in the first place), and real risk of harm to you?

MathiasBroucek · 27/01/2023 00:42

It seems unlikely that banning second jobs and paying them less will improve quality…..

I might like a requirement that a candidate must have done something else meaningful before becoming an MP, whether it was doing a non-political job, being a parent (or other form of caring) etc.

Cattenberg · 27/01/2023 01:03

I would ban MPs from voting on legislation related to their business interests.

You’re a landlord? Then you must recuse yourself from voting against a bill which would require landlords to ensure their residential properties are fit for human habitation.

You own shares in a private medical firm? No, you don’t get to vote on a bill which would allow the further privatisation of the NHS.

Your party received a very large donation from a particular firm? No, you’re not allowed to award them a multi-million pound contract to manufacture a lot of dodgy PPE, then burn it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/01/2023 01:09

Running the country is a very important job. Add constituency duties and having a life and there's no way in high heaven you could do another job alongside it.

EllieM27 · 27/01/2023 02:17

I am very tired and I read the title of this thread as “Pelicans must be banned from a second job” and was wondering what in the hell the pelicans’ first job was.

I just wanted to share that with you all.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/01/2023 02:32

Pelicans transport fish by air @EllieM27. That's their main job. They sometimes do guest appearances in zoos.

You lost me at this point. I am not sure what relevance your "easy job with the council" had to the subject matter, but:
(A) I'm wondering which council has easy jobs where you only work 20% of the time you are paid for and,
(B) how you can claim any moral highground based on your own claim of lazing around on the taxpayers dollar?

In Puerto Vallarta they like to waddle around the beach or lazily swim in the shallows looking very photogenic....I was watching them this afternoon!
